If you bought a new rifle and it came like that.  No, it is not normal.

If you mean you have a fairly new rifle and it is wearing that way as you continue to use it, I wouldn't say it matters.  But it probably indicates that you are pulling up and back on the charging handle, instead of straight back every time you rack the rifle.

My opinion, no.  If it is new or even somewhat used it shouldn't be like that unless there is an excessive amount of play between the upper and the charging handle.  I have a rifle I build new, ran over 1200 rounds through her and she shows no where near that amount of wear.  I have also shot many AR15 rifles with a decent round count and haven't seen that amount of wear.  Maybe something is too tight/out of spec?  I don't know but it appears to me to be excessive for a new rifle.

Just curious, what does the number of rounds have to do with it?  My first thought was,  wow he does a lot of dry firing.

I don't think it is anything to worry over, but you should be able to examine the fit with the bcg out of the way and see what's rubbing.

Either your upper or your CH may be slightly out of tolerance. Is there either excessive play, or snugness between the two?

Are you running your AR dry?

Is it a cheap gun?

That is a lot of wear for being fairly "new" Ive never seen charging handles wear that much even if heavily used. Looks like something is slightly out of spec. But if it doesn't affect performance i wouldn't worry about it. Just lube the heck out of it and go.

Do you lube your AR? Like the other poster mentioned there are most likely tolerance issues. What's the inside of your upper look like?

Give this a try, clean all clp off of your charging handle and then take a black sharpie marker and cover over all of the exposed area/metal on your charging handle.  Re-insert it into the upper and cycle it a few times, remove it and see where the wear marks are.  This may help you diagnose your issue.  It sounds to me bro something is out of spec.  I hope this helps.

That couldn't have came off of a "new" rifle

That charging handle has seen a lot of use

There is nothing wrong, you are just side and top loading it.  At most, the charging handle also has a crappy finish applied to it.  If something was out of spec, either the handle wouldn't fit, or there would be extra space, meaning less rubbing, not more.

Well if it was slightly out of spec, its definitely not anymore with all that wear! Looks good man, fire away.

if it works okay, it is okay. It's just a charging handle....no problem

Ever row a boat with untreated aluminum oars? The metal wears off in your hands and leaves them black in a short while. It's just aluminum, pretty soft stuff. If it's working - you're fine.

If it bothers you, get a BCM Gunfighter Mod4 charging handle (about $50).  That is one high quality upgrade that doesn't have a weight penalty.

Yeah, a BCM Gunfighter would be a good start. Could be something slightly out of spec. I tried a PRI Gas Buster CH in a Mega upper and it was so tight and it showed early wear. Put a BCM in the Mega upper and it's smooth as butter. The weird thing is, the PRI charging handle fit and runs perfect in my BCM upper, just not the Mega

Id Huck that handle into the ocean.
None of mine looking anywhere close to that after lots and lots of use.

My one AR that did have excessive wear like that was the one that had a major bolt malfunction.
Broken gas key. It was hanging on by a thread.

Ditch that handle.

Your betting a $20 handle on a $1000 rifle.

I have the same problem but on the right side of the ch. I think when I charge it I pull and push to the right that causes that wear.

I have an AR with about 15K rounds through it that looks like that(I realize it does not reciprocate but to give an idea of usage). Something is out of speck. I also have a gun with 2K rounds and mostly the left side is worn that bad from the angle I pull it. Both side and the top is iffy. I would honestly get a new handle, or even a buddies that is not new but has wear, this will help to gauge if it as the handle or your upper.
