Like a lot of people I wasn't very fond of my stock grip on the ol' Bushy so did a little tinkering and here's what I came up with... Wrap the grip in 550 paracord. The starting and ending ends should be on the open side of the grip so they don't feel odd under your palm (right side for lefty's, left for righty's). Start near the bottom of the grip, it won't be perfectly parallel to the bottom of the grip but I didn't notice any discomfort. You can wrap up high enough to actually cover the evil little blister-maker hole, but be careful how far up you go, it is possible to wrap so much that you interfere with the safety operation. You can wrap additional thicknesses of paracord around any section of the grip you want bulked up. Paracord adds girth but can be pretty slick. Go down to your local bike or outdoor shop and get a flatted out tube from the service department, about a 1.95 size workes well; the shop will be more than happy to hand them over, no cost to you. Measure it out and cut one piece long enough to cover the paracord. Don't be shy about stretching the tube, it'll go, you just need to be patient. Depending on your needs/desires you can cut shorter sections of tubing to bulk up certain grip areas. I used two that were cut to fit from the top of the paracord to the top of the finger bump on my grip. The tubes I used are very tacky to the touch so grip is much improved. I didn't bother with double sided tape, epoxy or anything else to help hold things together. With the tackiness of the tubes and proper tension on the paracord I haven't had any shifting issues at all. Yes, it takes more time than just bolting on an aftermarket piece, but for about $3.00 spent and the ability to make it exactly what I wanted it's worth it. |
| a little to add. When using paracord try soaking it in hot water for about a hour. That makes it just a tad more strechy, wrap it as tight as possible (when wet). When the paracord dries it will shrink slightly making a very tight wrap. Just my .02 cents from someone who has done this and other projects with paracord. |
