I need some inexpensive 223 rounds for some plinking.  This is my first ar-15 and I have never bought bulk ammo before.  I am basically looking for the cheapest stuff out there that is still safe to shoot out of my AR?  I want to buy 1000 rounds.

Thanks!

Tenbrook

Here is some stuff I found so far, is this about as cheap as it gets?

i'm new too, but someone somewhere gave me this web site:

http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=.223

people post ammo deals from different sites.  it shows the cost per round on the far right.  i've gotten a couple of the 700 round Silver Bear cans and am happy with it.

As long as it functions well in your AR, go for it.  I've never shot either except in my AK.  Barnaul (AKA Brown Bear) is supposed to be good quality for 7.62x39.  Just be prepared to do a lot of cleaning afterwards!

Why will I need to do allot of cleaning after shooting the cheaper rounds? Are they dirtier?

There is a thread in here (AR15.com), somewhere, about this.
Basically the steel case does not expand the same way brass does. A by-product of that is carbon and gases passing around the case and building up around the chamber face. It is not the lacquer or poly that could cause it to bind but the by-products of combustion. Buy some Hoppe's, CLP and a chamber brush and you'll be fine.

Buy it, Shoot it, Clean it. my .02
