| Hey guys, I'm looking for an upper that will allow me sqeeze out as much long-range (400-600m) accuracy as I can for under a grand. I have a BCM 16" middy at the moment, but I'd like to put more of a varmint setup together. Is a bull barrel really that much of an advantage? I am not planning on carrying this thing around too much, so weight is not a big issue. Currently I'm eyeing the 24" RRA varmint upper. Any suggestions? |

An HBAR profile should be plenty rigged for ya. My 14.7" LWRC HBAR barrel smacks my steel gongs (18"x18") at 400 yards all day...length gives you more velocity, but not necissarily more accuracy. I think a 16-18" HBAR would work just fine for ya when you toss a decent scope on it, get your trigger time, and possibly swap in a better trigger for accurate shooting. |

Im looking at doing a BCM SAM-R here pretty soon for a range toy. That might be something to look at as well.
IMHO any barrel over 20" for most most uses is overkill, and does not offer that much in return. So I'd stay between 16" and 20",particularly when considering resale. Personally for 400+ meters(and my deer gun) I went with a Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel. So far Ive been very impressed with the 6.5G and is identical in weight as the 5.56 uppers of similar build.I can say without a doubt that the 6.5G has alot more punch on target at range and is why I wanted it.Might be something else to ponder. |
| buy something like a compass lake or similar national match 20" upper just specify flat top- if they can take prizes at 600+ yards at camp perry probably good for your application. you can even go cheaper with similar products from a lot of companies- the likes of bushmaster or dpms- my personal uppers (national match 20" ban compliant free float tube under a2 handguards, hbar) give sub minute of angle with iron sights and they were bought for under 600 bucks |
| I have a 16" tactical AA 6.5 Grendel and the 19.5" hunter for deer hunting. 16 for stalking and driving and 19.5 for certain stands. I have a 20" Wilson and 18" WOA SPR 5.56 for my long range acccuracy units. But I must say either of the grendels also excel at distance. 5.56 is cheaper to fire with quality ammo. I don't see the need for a barrel longer than 20" for 400-600 yards although additional velocity is always nice. |

Ive had exceptional service from one of these:
http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=U15TB-1&Category=bce7fa68-373e-4afc-b00e-63fe2c75d131 For the money, right out of the box they are very hard to beat in my experience. The 1:8 twist used in the barrels works extremely well with heavy OTM's. I just wish Armalite would use that 1:8 twist in all the 5.56 barrels. |

My suspicion is that 90 percent of people will not get better groups by buying a boutique upper from noveske/larue vs the rra originally mentioned. Anyone have extensive expeeience with both at 400 yards+ ? Your suspicion would be correct. Hell, I had a .325" 100 yrd. 5-shot group the other day through a Model 1 20" bull barrel. I believe that the main issue is to actually find a barrel that will do it regardless of the name associated with it. Now, paying the money for Noveske/Larue will definitely increase your odds of doing that to a high degree, but RRA (Wilson) is no slouch when compared to those companies in the barrel department. However, if I was going to spend the coin, it would not be with one of those companies. I would go directly to Lilja or Krieger and be virtually guaranteed of a shooter, provided I could do my part, which is the most important aspect of long range work. |

I've just gotten through buiding my "precision" upper. I wanted something that would hit MOA and still be light enough to hump a mile or two when I needed to. If I was going to bulid a presicion rifle that I knew I wasn't going to have to carry and didn't have to compromise on size or weight, I think that would be pretty easy.
The most comfortable and fun "stationary" AR I ever had/shot was a 24" stainless bull barrel. I didn't get the longer barrel because of the velocity or because I thought it would be more accurate. I got it because it was heavy. I believe that the longer and heavier a rifle is, the better or more comfortably it will shoot. With that barrel length, muzzle blast was not a concern at all and muzzle rise was non existent. J&T Distributing has, I believe, 24" bull barrels with a 1:8 twist for something like $199. If I recall they are using Wilson Barrels and they ain't bad at all. |
| Novesky, and la rue are fine barrels for what they are for, but for accuracy out to 400-600 yards like at Camp Perry you will see very accurate barrels from white oaks, krieger,Fulton armory,JP enterprise,Wilson combat, but that is what these barrels are known for. |
