i know the better of the two barrels are the chrome lined ones, but im looking at doing a budget build "field" gun and citadel barrels are selling a 16" barrel for 99 bux. is it a waste of money compared to a used CL barrel on the EE? thoughts? |

There's nothing wrong necessarily with an unlined carbon steel barrel, just that it's subject to corrosion (rust) so it needs more care. If left loaded for extended periods of time, especially in humid environments, you'll need to clean the chamber every now and then due to dissimilar metal corrosion between the steel barrel and brass cartridge case, unless you get some nickel cases for your in-the-pipe ammo. (that's one reason why nickel case LE ammo used to be common)
Unchromed barrels take a lot of the blame for the Vietnam era problems with the AR15/M16 series, although it's probably only a small part of the issues from that era. Millions of firearms of all types are sold each year with unlined steel barrels, untold millions more used guns have them, they'll last for decades with a modicum of care. Not a tacticool answer, but it is what it is. It'll be fine, just follow the decades-long advice of a wet patch down the bore after cleaning with a reasonable corrosion protectant and make sure you clean the chamber as well. |

Good evening.
I'm personally very interested in how many rounds it would take you to shoot a $99.00 barrel into whatever state of condition makes it unusable, inaccurate, or you just plain get tired of lookin' at the old beater. I personally own two Model 1 Sales chrome-moly, 16", HBAR, carbine barrels that are excellent shooters. Paid $145 each. With proper care and feeding I plan on them each lasting many thousands of rounds. Maybe some archaeologist will dig them up thousands of years from now and try to figure out what they did and then put even more rounds through them. Keep us posted. |

Quoted:
My understanding is that chrome moly barrels will shoot more accurately than chrome lined barrels- because the chrome lining is not perfectly even. Although by shooting "more accurately," I assume the difference is sub 0.1 MOA... This was the case a long time ago, but the science has advanced a lot since then. There is generally no measurable difference in the accuracy of any given un-chromed barrel and an equivalent chromed barrel. |
