I am about to complete my AR build with my upper and I am trying to figure out if there is any advantages to having a chrome lined barrel verses not? All the info I have obtained so far on this site has led me to build a very nice AR and I am sure I wont be disappointed again

Chrome lined will offer longer barrel life and easier cleaning...not sure of any other advantages or disadvantages though.

Supposedly chrome is 'less accurate', but for 556 barrels, EVERY one I owned was chrome lined, so I officially dont know what I am talking about.

I know chrome lined is supposed to be less accurate than stainless, but are non-chrome lined somewhere in the middle?  BTW, I get most of my information from people that don't know what they're talking about...so I guess my post is now suspect.

No, Man..  I hold out for the Chrome lined barrels.  I have never had a 223/556 barrel that was not chrome lined.  I have had steel non lined in 22 and 762x39; and they were a pain in the ass to clean.  My friends and some of the shop counter guys usually rib me about 'coming out of the dark ages' and dump the chrome.  Their major selling point is that the Steel CM is "more accurate".  I have scored "Expert" with my 'inferiorly chrome lined barrels' while these same so-called professional gun guys (I am speaking of the ONES I KNOW) cant hit a pizza box at 100 yards with irons.

I am not slamming you Dogue.  I am just saying that I have no basis of comparison because I have never owned a non chrome lined 223/556 AR.  I would rather have the longer life out of the gun over the 'accuracy' that most people cant achieve free standing, sling and irons; and my buddies 'harass' me about it...

Yeah longer life theoretical reduced accuracy. Not sue it matters to most people as thy won't shoot out a regular barrel or expose the rifle to harsh conditions, but all my rifles are chrome lined. I don't think there are many standard chrome moly barrels without chrome lining.

CV?  I dont mess with them, so I aint really up on the lingo.  Chrome Vanadium? is the stuff they make non CL barrels out of?

OP: get the chrome lined.  IMO, its a better investment.  If you want to be putting 5 shots in a dime at 100 yards... well that's a whole nother story.

Okay with that being said how about Chrome lined verses Stainless? There isnt alot of difference in price at what I am looking at so maybe 75.00 dollars from non-chrome to stainless so I can deal with that I am just trying to build a good rifle at a decent price

I can cover 5 shots with a nickle from my chrome lined DD M4V5 using FGGM ammo at 100 yards. Maybe that is not accurate enough for some but I'll take it any day.

I'm just pulling your chain a bit.

I agree that unless you're building a competitive rifle that using chrome lined is probably the way to go.  All things being equal I'd say the trigger has more effect on accuracy than the barrel lining anyway.

What these guys ^ have already said.
Plus
Chrome lining is very hard to do with an even covering, least-wise even enough to not cause variances
in accuracy when lining the inside of a barrel. Minute variances in thickness of the chrome inside the barrel
can create drag on the bullet as it is passing, in extreme cases, on just one side of the bullet. This drag
will adversely effect the accuracy. By how much? Sometimes it won't be noticeable to your average range
shooter. Other times it'll be enough for that bench-rest competitor to not use chrome-lined barrels.

For non-sub-MOA competition shooters (you and I), go chrome lined. It'll last a lifetime, and be easier to clean.

The only ammo-related problems I ever had were in my son's kit-built CAR-15. It didn't have a CL barrel and sometimes the cases would stick in the chamber(this was the old green lacquer stuff). I swapped the barrel for a Bushmaster 'pencil' chrome-lined barrel and the problem went away. I won't own an AR-15 that doesn't have a chromed bore, mainly because I like to shoot cheap Russian ammo whenever possible!
