I've always heard with pistols it's best to clean them before their first use - because of all the grease. Does the same hold true for ARs?

If so, then should I also clean the whole bolt carrier group before using it? I watched a detailed video last night about how to take down the BCG - firing pin, extractor, and all. Should I bother with giving the whole thing a detailed cleaning like that before taking it out to zero it?

Thanks!

Yes.

First cleaning is a great way to get rid of preservative oil, grease, dirt, bugs and what-have-you. Also a very goo opportunity to find any broken or missing parts. Think of it as cleaning and inspection. BSW

Will Hoppe's #9 solvent and oil work for everything or should I get something else?

The lube crap that's on them from the factory needs to come off and be replaced with a proper lube like CLP or FP-10.

That will work just fine.  For oil find Break Free CLP. There are better oils out on the market, but your Rifle will run with  BF CLP just fine.

For the most part, lube is lube.

Motor oil, LSA, CLP, bearing grease, Rem oil, Ballistol, all work. Some prevent rust better than others, some stick around longer than others. The thing is to keep plenty of whatever lube in there, Run the AR wet. Not to where oil is dripping off, but wet. BSW

That will work just fine. Just make sure that you properly lube the rifle after cleaning it. Click here for cleaning and click here for lube points.

Take it down, clean it, oil it, reassemble.

I do this weekly to stay in practice and to keep fresh oil in it.

I disassemble it multiple times during the week for fun.
