I replaced my flash suppressor and discovered that the muzzle had a lot of carbon buildup.  Do I need to clean this?  If I do need to clean it how often should I take off the flash suppressor to do it?  I don't think I can clean it without taking off the flash suppressor.

Thanks!

I use Break-Free Foam Bore Cleaner to clean my barrel. It fills all voids in the entire barrel from the locking lugs, to the FH, softening up carbon deposits. No need to remove the FH.

A follow up with CLP and a q-tip after the BF FBC, is all it takes to remove carbon build up in the FH.

Some folks don't bother with carbon build up in this area. I found if it's kept under check from day one it's much easier to clean than if let go for an extended period of time, then attempted to clean.

Quibs a sharp cookie and delivers sound advice. That said, I have never bothered to clean the crown area and have seen no adverse affects. That goes for the DCM M14 I used to shoot, my garand, and several AR's over the years. You also risk damaging the crown/champfer if you get over zeleous and nick the bastard. To me it's like the gas tube. No cleaning needed. Just my 2c.

Leave it alone as to not risk damaging the crown. As long as the carbon is evenly covered around the crown's perimeter, it won't degrade accuracy.

For those who care to remove the carbon; Using the proper technique and equipment (solvent and q-tips) poses no risk to the crown of the barrel.

I remember way back in BT we were advised to clean in there by using the end of a cleaning rod to scrape it.......   Never did like that idea but the rifles were not mine either.

That would be an example of what NOT TO DO.
