I'll be picking up my new baby soon, and was planning on heading straight to the range.  Do I need to clean the rifle before I use it?

I clean EVERY gun before I fire it for the first time, whether is something I bought new or used or built myself.

You should clean it. (It'll most likely be covered in oil anyway)

A new barrel should at least get a patch run through it to get the critters outta there.

you should clean it.  This will remove all the debris that can accumulate inside during manufacturing, and that can be a lot.  It also allows you to inspect all of the innards for defects.

I like to shoot new guns as soon as possible, I'm funny that way, but they get a cleaning/inspection first.

ALWAYS run a patch or two down the bore, and properly lube it.  It general comes from the factory lubed for storage protection, not proper functioning.

I sold an upper to a guy who disassembled it (it had never been fired by me and it was purchased new) and he claimed there was black residue in the gas tube.  I never cleaned the weapon before storing it in a good place so is it possible that machining could cause this?  Or maybe a test round from BM?  Id like to know because it baffles me where the hell this could be comin from.

A coworker's new Armalite came with a dirty cleaning patch in the bore.  This was right after the name switch from Eagle Arms.
