| I managed to find an original M-16 stock for my carbine (much more comfortable than the too long A2 stock) It is kind of gunky on the outside though. What is the best way to clean the plastic? I know some solvents will mar some plastic. |

Any of the regular household cleaners should be able to clean off that stock pretty well. Take everything off it you can, fill up the sink with a double dose of Dawn and nice hot water, and start scrubbing it with a rough rag and maybe a plastic bristle brush (I wouldn't use a sponge scrubber). You can use the old toothbrush to get gunk out of the checkering on the trapdoor buttpad and screw slots. If there is adhesive residue on the stock, some Hoppe's #9 on a rag will take most kinds right off, no problem. Then just drop it in the dish rack, let it dry, reassemble, install, and go shooting. If it looks a little dried out and old, just rub it down with a little CLP, then rub off as much as you can with a dry cloth and it should turn out nice. That "original" stock is the A1. The A2 is also a military stock, but it is 3/8" longer. You can use your original receiver extension (aka buffer tube); just delete the A2 stock spacer and use an A1 upper screw in place of the A2 screw. Or cut 3/8" off your A2 screw, either way. If you cut it, make sure to deburr and clean the threads so it doesn't gouge the threads on the back of your receiver extension and possibly cause you to crossthread it. That's a steel screw in an aluminum tube. |

b0ne, Thanks for the tips, It cleaned up really nice. The stock I have is even older than the M16A1 version. It is from the original M16. It has an integral rounded rubber buttpad instead of the checkered plate and trapdoor and a different type of sling swivel mounted slightly further forward than the A1 or A2. |
