I'm awaiting the arrival of my first AR.  It's a RRA Entry Tactical.  I'm a hunter so most of my rifles are bolt action and a few semi-autos as well.  Other than a normal rifle  cleaning kit is there any other tools or supplies I should get or have on hand?  thanks

I favor Kleen-bore rods & brushes.  Their field kits are similar to U.S. Government Issue kits.  AR-15/M-16/5.56mm Field Pack Cleaning Kit

Some of this may already be in your current inventory...

AR-15 cleaning kit including the following

The Owner's Manual for your rifle or the U.S. Army / U.S. Marines Operator's Manual

Cleaning rod (either a one-piece type or several rod sections that screw together)
M-16/AR-15 Chamber Brush
.223 Caliber Bore Brush
"General Purpose" double-ended cleaning brush Nylon Bristle Gun Brush
Bore Patches (sized for .22 or .223/5.56NATO)
Bottle of CLP, preferably BreakFree-CLP
Q-Tip type cotton swabs
Pipe Cleaners
Paper Towels and/or Cloth rags

Optional items
.30 Caliber sized patches (to apply CLP to various surfaces and swab away dirt)
Bathroom Towel (your choice of color) to act as a cleaning surface (on your lap, on your workbench or on your work table)
Tool-box or Fishing Tackle-box to store cleaning supplies
Bolt Carrier Carbon Scraper

Good luck and enjoy your rifle.

Thanks QUIB.  I have mostly everything listed.  I'm a little curious about the forceps.  I'll need to pick up a chamber brush.  As for the CLP, I notice that is what most recommend.  Is that supposed to be the best bore cleaning solution?

Not a problem, glad to help.

The forceps come in handy for cleaning out the locking lug area.

The best? I don’t know, opinions differ on that one. I personally get the results I’m looking for using BF BCF, CLP and LP and have no intent on changing.

Quib Thanks for the GREAT detail.  Where did you get the #5 and #13 Chamber Brush and One piece Rod.?  Thanks! I am also a  new Bushy M4 A3 responsible civilian owner.  I was curious on the clean kit fundamentals and did not want to get into a jihad over solutions etc.

Muchos Gracias

#5 is a DIY chamber brush made from a section of aluminum cleaning rod and an x-acto knife handle.

#13 is a one piece cleaning rod from Kleen-bore.

BF CLP will keep your rifle working in top order. I use another oil that I feel is a better cleaner and lube than BF CLP it is called Weapons Shield CLP. I would have no problems using BF CLP if my rifle needed  some lube and cleaning and I had no WS CLP.

I guess I'm cheating.  When I clean the CAR I use carb or brake cleaner till the crud stops flowing out and then when it dries I spray some RemOil on it.  No issues yet, but I really haven't shot it much.
