I have owned several ARs over the years and still own a few, but mine have always been the 5.56 variety.  I have always wanted a 9mm, but every time I get the urge, I always end up changing my mind before actually purchasing one.  If I get one, it will be a Colt 6450, so don't bother trying to change my mind on that one.  Like it or not, I only buy Colt ARs.  I'm not saying that Colts are any better than other brands; that is just the brand that has always worked for me, so I am sticking with it.  With that being said I have a couple of questions:

1) I keep reading all this stuff about ramped bolts being better than the original Colt design.  Why exactly is that?  And, for some reason I am thinking that I heard that Colt is ramping their's now from the factory...any truth to that?

2) What RELIABLE magazine options do I have besides factory Colt?  What about CProducts, Spikes, RRA, or Metalform (or is it MecGar) or any other brand of mags?

Any other information you'd like to share would be welcomed.

Thanks!

Regarding mags. Metalform used to be OEM for colt so they are gtg. Now I think c products are. I have a dozen or so c products mags for my RRA and they have been 100%.

My new colt 6450 fas a ramped bolt and an m-16 hammer. It also has stainless steel fcg pins. As far as mags go I have no idea. My gun is a feb 2010 production and came with colt branded mags marked with a date of 6-98. The still have the restricted govt, mil, law enforcement only markings. The guy at the store said the c product mags work great but I have no experience with them

I feel better knowing the new Colts are coming with ramped bolts.  I am just not really all that comfortable dropping over a grand in a new rifle only to have to ship off the bolt to a to make it work reliably over time.

As far as the mags go, my main question is this.  Can I get mags that will work reliably in this rifle for less than the $65 that Colt wants for theirs?  I don't use Colt mags in my 5.56 guns.  I use D&H/Labelle because they are 100% reliable and cost $9.  If I only had to buy one, then $65 would not be that big of a deal, but when I typically buy at least 10 mags for a long gun, that gets a little expensive really quick.

I use all C-Products mags in my 6450 and they work 100%. I've got 4 out of the 26 I have that need to be RMA'd since they won't accept anymore than 10 rounds. But all the rest have run perfect.

I have an older 6450 and it doesn't have a ramped bolt.  I've had no problems in it.  The CP mags run like crap in my gun so I only use metal form ones now.

I've got a 05/05 production date 6450 w/out the ramped bolt or cool m16 hammer and it runs 100% with any ammo I've tried. I have 2 factory Colt 20 Ed mags that came with the carbine and 3 cp products mags. All work well. One of the cproducts mags needed an updated follower but seems to run fine now. I love how light and simple the weapon is. It's just plain fun to shoot.

I just wish they came with a flattop upper.

Thats my one wish with the 6450 as well! I've been thinking about getting one of the shorty RRA uppers to SBR it and have the flat top

Converting to a flat top is not a problem. Makes it much easier for old eyes to hit targets at 100 yards.

My bolt has been ramped (by MJP), and I used a JP Enterprise rounded speed hammer. It was the only 'large pin' rounded hammer I could find. The gas block is there just to hold the handguards on.

It really isn't too hard to convert it to a flat top.  I just got a 9mm upper reciever.  I did however also send my lower into US anodizing to have it redone black to match... so it was a bit extra work, but it was WELL WORTH it.
