I searched some of the older 733 threads, but still need some help. I have a couple C7 style uppers, one is a grey CH marked. The other is a stamped C with a splintered A forge mark with a 4 on the front and feed-ramps. I would like to build a 733 clone with the grey CH upper, the other is purple and would need to send it to US Anodizing. From the research I have done so far it seems the C7 style uppers were used on the later 733.

It looks like on the later 733 an A2 lower was used. Colt 6 hole handguards. Colt 2 position buffer tube. Round handguard cap without M203 notches. I have a few of the N1 stocks that I collected, it looks like one of those would be used. Looking for a 733 barrel, if I can't find one I will probably use a BCM lightweight for now. If I use the BCM, I have a Colt FSB with a C and a Bell on it with bayonet lug. Would that FSB be correct? Was the later 733 grey or black?

The lower will be a 80% lower with the Colt logo engraved, the word Colt with the C wrapping around the OLT, and M16A2. Was the word Commando used on the lowers, or just the M16A2? What serial number would I use on a later one? Do I need to worry about using a serial number that was used on an original lower?

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Underwood,

More knowledgeable people will be along to help out, but FWIW all 733s I've ever seen were rolled with the Commercial M16a2 markings and grey colored. Reference this pic of a 733:

Probable 2 pos receiver extension

Old-tyle CAR locking ring

N1 stock

A2 lower with right side selector markings (lower looks grey, upper looks slightly different in color, hard to really tell, same color as the reciever extension).

C7 upper with round FA

Or this might be of interest:

its a NIB 933 rollmarked A2 commercial, they don't have a 733s that I see

I have one, er well not the original lower but everything else so I can give you specifics to your questions later. Not sure on the year of mine but it has the A1 sights with FA and shell deflector (so c7 I think?). No bayonet lug. 6 Hole handguard. Round cap, no m203 notches. I don't think the barrel is stepped either. If you know of a way to check the year that would be cool, but when you research you will probably find that they used a variety of uppers.

The original lower would have been marked as so. Notice it is marked as M16A2 COMMANDO

I'm pretty sure my stock is a multi-position but I don't remember specifically. And I can check too for any other specific questions you have. It's definitely a lot of fun to shoot but also surprisingly accurate and effective. Kind of the ultimate in minimalist and lightweight carbines. If you have any other specific questions let me know.

Thanks for the info BlindguyMcSqueezie and sawdeanz. Still looking for parts and info on the serial number. I will be using the grey upper marked CH. I have a grey delta ring, but trying to find the handguard cap and 6 hole handguards. And still looking for a locking ring and 2 position buffer tube.

Correction, I checked and mine handguard cap does have notches (I'm assuming those are the m203 notches you are talking about)? And the stock has 4 positions, (fully retracted, 2 in the middle, and fully extended). Good luck on your build!

I was offered a Commando lower a few years ago. Anyway I decided to let it pass as we were not sure if it was real, or fake. I will post a picture:

I built a 723 last year by using this 1988 Colt brochure as my guideline. No wiggle room other than my lower is a NDS-M16A1, extension tube NDS, 6 hole hand guards Lone Star, and DD LW 14.5" barrel. My favorite A2 by far. John Thomas made the barrel extension to make OAL legal. Hope this helps.

Another Colt brochure showing different upper and A1 birdcage.
Everything I've researched about the 733 indicates many different part configurations. The 'ol "whatever Colt had laying around" story.

the m733 like most colt's came in different variations.  i've seen them with a1 uppers , a1e1 uppers , and a2 uppers.
the most popular configuration is prob the a1e1 or "c7" upper variant as seen in the movie HEAT.  the later a2 upper 733's were used in the movie black hawk down , most a2 upper 733's also seem to retain the bayo lug that was removed from earlier 733's.
i'm putting a model 733 together with an a1e1 upper like the guns in HEAT , it took a while to collect the parts.  it sounds like you have most of the parts right for a c7 style upper although the bayo lug would prob be shaved.  i can get you a pic of my fsb if you would like.  also on the 2 position tube it would have a car lock nut and not a castle nut.
they are great shooters , my upper has been sharing time on my registered nodak lower while i wait for the F1 on the 733's lower , i just registered an a2 lower off a 6940.  the nodak has a franklin armory bfs trigger installed though and with the 733 upper it can dump a mag in under 7 seconds , it takes longer to get the grin off my face.  commando's in any flavor are just bad ass
