I'm confused, and really confused about the cutting off of the barrel.

I read this post three times, and damned if I can figure it out.

Sorry OP

The oil that Colts come bathed in smells like...machine oil.

I'm not a huge Colt fan or "kool-aid" drinker, but do you really think not having lube evenly distrubuted on the rifle is a QA issue?  Also, do you have much understanding of how these rifles are assembled?  Why woud you think a M4 barrel was "cut off" to add a longer barrel (A3 = 20").

Whether or not their QA has gone to the dogs is a source of debate among some.  Personally not owning a Colt currently myself I avoid that arguement since I have nothing experience based to add.  But the things you mention don't seem to make a lot of sense.

I've been a believer in Colt quality until today. I bought a Colt model 6721 and went to my FFL holder today to pick it up and was crushed by what I found. Now let me give a little background before I make my statement. I purchased a 6721 back in 2006 and like a @#$%^ moron I sold it to buy a 6920. When I bought the one in 06 it came with the smaller handguards which I preferred and the it wasn't marked M4 on the front face of the carrying handle like the one is that I went to pick up. I made some calls but couldn't get in touch with Colt because they were already closed. What I found out was that all Colt AR's now come with the bigger double heat shield handguards which is fine and can live with. I also found that all the 6721's out have M4 marked on the carrying handle which may just say that on all removable carrying handles which I can also live with no big deal. However on the barrel at the FSB there were metal shavings present and smelled like it just came off a lathe or something. All Colt rifles I have bought come covered in uniformly across the rifle. The exposed barrel and FSP was bone dry but compensator was wet with lube.
My question; Is Colt taking an M4 upper cutting the barrel off and replacing it was the A3 barrel and then sending them out? And has their QC gone to shit.

Whats the difference between the 6721 and 6920?

mmm hmm

No, Colt doesn't cut their barrels and replace them with new ones. And while I do not work for Colt and have never been into their factory, so it may be true that I dont know that for sure; I still know it for sure.

The 6721 is the 16" heavy barrel instead of the M4 cut barrel. My guess is that Colt is probably throwing on the M4 handguards and carry handle on the 6721 because they maybe have an excess supply of them? I don't think the oil and loose metal shavings are a QC issue though. The 6721 and 6920 use different barrels so I'm not sure what the OP's reference was to them cutting the M4 barrel down for the 6721.

Different twist rates too. 1/9 for the 6721 and 1/7 for the 6920

For the life of me I have no idea what question is being asked here?  Cut off the barrel and attach a new one?

To the OP.  Serious question.  What is your experience and understanding of the functional workings of this platform?

Metal filings around the FSB - are just from the the drilling of the taper pin FSB.  (all done after phosphate)
Normal stuff.

my 6920 had loose shavings around the FSB and had some machine oil on it.  I must be confused because i thought, "ehh, someone forgot to hit this with a blast of air before they packed it up"  so i took a tooth brush and flicked them off.  I'm not sure how you think it affects the quality though.

So Colts quality control sucks because they oil the rifle before shipping and there were a few excess metal shaving from drilling the taper pin holes?

Wow.

Fuck it I guess I was pissed when I wrote the post and could not articulate enough what I was trying ask. AND NO the lube on the rifle wasn't the fucking issue nor the metal shavings. I guess you would have to see the rifle in person to understand what I'm talking about. I am very familiar with the AR platform and have had both a 6721 and a 6920. I was able to make some calls and got my questions answered. So thanks for the smart ass responses from some of you they were real helpful.

Nobody could understand what you were talking about, so while I understand that it is frustrating, it is not anyone else's fault that you were not clear.  As for the tone of the responses... hang around long enough, and you will consider this pretty mild.

First of all you need to get past being "crushed" (better yet just drop it from your verbage altogether or it could get your ass kicked here in Texas) when a new Colt AR shows up smelling like it came off some nasty ol' lathe and has those horrible metal shavings on it.

BTW, last time I heard that term was when my neighbor's wife's poodle chased my Harley and ran under the 160 rear Avon.
He told me later his ol lady was 'crushed'. (so was the poodle)
