I recently purchased a Colt Sporter II with very little apparent use.  I have not fired it yet.  During some experimentation I have discovered something I have never encountered in a Colt AR (or other AR, for that matter) before.

When cycling the action manually, safety off, bolt closed, trigger pulled, occasionally the bolt will retract with the charging handle about 1 inch and then jam completely in place.  I can move the charging handle forward to latch, but it will not retract any further than the 1 inch.  The slightest pressure on the forward assist will release the bolt and it will slam home.  After this the bolt will retract normally.

Any ideas?

Have you taken a peek down your buffer tube?

Not yet.  Good idea though.

The Sporter II models have the large front pivot pin if I remember correctly. If the previous owner added a different upper it may have an offset pin adapter to mate it to a small pin upper. The offset adapter must be turned to the correct position to give the proper clearance for the upper and lower to hinge closed at the correct angle. If it is not alligned properly, the rear of the upper receiver could be too high thus causing the rear of the bolt carrier to bind on the buffer tube. This would only apply if there was an offset adapter in use.

Not applicable in this case, but good information.  I may put another upper on this puppy.  I do have a DPMS pin adapter that seems to work about half the time.

I have pulled the buffer spring and nothing appears amiss.  Perhaps the spring was binding, but it is no longer, I hope.
