Picked up a GI surp A1 upper at the gun show yesterday. Beecause of the almost perfect condition it's in, I assumed that it was a very late issue item, but the barrel marking has me wondering. It has the usual C MP, but after it is marked "CHROME BARREL". It's been years since I looked at a Colt A1 barrel, but I don't recall seeing this marking before. Makes me wonder; Is this a very early issue piece, made just after the change over to plated bores, or do I just have a lousy memory, and they're all marked this way? |
| Appreciate the referral, but it dooesn't answer my question. The Bigger Hammer site shows both "CB" (which I remember seeing in the past) and then shows a pic of the "chrome bore' marking. The problem with the site, which I've seen commented on here, is that it often leaves you with more questions than you started with[;D] |

It means nothing different from C MP B, it's just a later barrel, that's all. I forget just what the MP indicates but it's in the book by Joe Poyer which I can't get at right now. Some barrels are marked C MP C, meaning chrome chamber ( some are just maked C ), later ones have C MP B for chrome bore, and still later ones C MP CHROME BORE. I had at one time a 1960s vintage barrel from when they weren't chroming anything yet. Its only marking was a 12 just aft of the flash suppressor, presumeably to indicate that it had 1:12" rifling and not 1:14". I also had a couple that I was told were made by Maremont. I don't recall precisely how the markings went but they had a drawing number and MP CHROME BORE on them. So, to answer your question, it's not an early barrel but a fairly late one, mid-1970s onward. |
| Thanks much[:D]. That's what I needed to know. So, my original supposition, that it is a late piece, was accurate. Remembered the earlier marking from when I had an SP1 rifle, back in the '70s, but didn't know whether the full word print out was before or after. Makes sense that it's later. This barreled upper is in too good a shape to have been on an older piece. now to get ahold of an A1 (SP1) stock aasy.[:D] |
