What is a Colt Expanse and why are they so much less expensive than an LE6920?

Because they're not 6920s.

Many non-Colt parts, no charging handle, no rear sight, etc.

The Expanse is Colt's price-point-matching entry level carbine (like the S&W Sport II).  The big thing is that the barrel is not chrome lined and doesn't have the (totally sweetly useless) M4 M203 notch.  It used to not come with a dust cover or forward assist, but now it comes with both of those.  There are some other minor things that are different too (it doesn't come with a rear sight, but big deal - Colt just uses the Magpul MBUS for rear sights).  It's a decent entry-level AR.

mine came with a real LE roll marked lower and a real colt bolt/bcg

It seems they vary a lot and some even have engraved lowers thought to be made by andersen

You're a little late to the party.

As far as the lowers, aside from some of the FCG parts my Expanse lower is just like my 6920 lower, LE SN prefix, Colt Defense markings, etc.

I'm speculating that the parts are made by Anderson or another OEM completely.

Colt did it with the Colt 9200 from what I've been reading.

I think he is referring to the lack of forward assist/dust cover on the early models but its my understanding they now come with these.

Colts Expanse series are assembled in Texas. All other Colts are from Connecticut.

Expanse carbines have, in past, varied greatly from one purchase to another.

Some uppers are C marked, others not.
Some carriers C marked, some not.
Bolts;  MPC markings vary, most do not have the white dot indicating proof test.Lug profile varies.
Barrels are not CL (16") and are marked differently than other Colt bbls(profile is different also ).
CE 1000-no dust cover/forward assist
CE 2000- dc/fa
Some lpks differ from milspec  (hammer profile).
LE prefix on lower serial numbers

Some things that I have verified personally.

Imo, an OEM 1/2 @ $7-750 is a much better choice. But to each their own.
