Hey guys, I am pretty new to ARs, I have had one for about 10 months now. A Delton non chrome lined upper on a DSA lower, with DPMS lower parts kit. I have been looking to upgrade and saw a post of someone claiming to be selling a Colt upper. Is there anything I can ask for to verify its the real deal? I have been burned online before when it comes to used guns.
Thanks in advance! |

The following sticky is in the Retro subforum and thus has a lot of retro parts. However, it shows in detail how Colt parts have changed over time.
In short, it depends on what type of "Colt gun" it is. That is the first place to start. This ought to get you started: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_123/296919_USGI_Colt_Carbine_parts_variation_guide_Edition_IV.html |
| He says its a Colt MT6700. I don't see it in the thread. Here is a picture. href=http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt216/droney2002/CAM00249-smaller.jpg" /> |

The upper receiver most of the time have a forge codes marked between the case deflector and charging handle, right side of receiver, letter "C" and at the right of the letter C a marking of the raw forge source mfg which could be a keyhole symbol, or splintered letter "A", etc. (see upper pics link and forge code list below). The bolt carrier should have a letter "C" at the left side close to the gas key, the bolt itself should have "MPC" (or C or MPD or MPC and letter code), see BiggerHammer link for barrels and bolts below. | Thanks a ton guys! Do you think the whole set up is worth 800 - 600 dollars or can I do better? IIt comes with a barska scope, nikon rings, and colt carry handle. I'm really looking to upgrade from my rifle(specs at top). Not that there is anything wrong it, I have just been told its nothing I should bet my life on. I'm not active duty, but if SHTF I want to be ready. |

For a little more you could get a complete Colt 6920. |

Might be a decent target upper, if that's what you're after. I wouldn't take the value of the scope into consideration for the price, it's not that much. Don't think that's a free float handguard on it. It's gonna be a bit heavy in the front with that HBAR.
At $600-800, I would just keep the Delton. Give your rifle a look over, is there really anything wrong with it? If you're just plinking around, there is nothing wrong with it. If you want something for varmints/precision paper punching, you can probably do better with that amount of money. I have an older Bushmaster with about 5k rounds down the barrel that I'd trust my life to more than any random M4 someone would hand me. It doesn't shoot laser beams, but I know it's reliable. |
| After the scare of 2008 I picked up a complete Colt lowered version of that upper for $700 from a local shop so that is high. It will also have the half circle bolt carrier though not an issue it is less desired. I have several Deltons and have no issue with them and would trust them with my life if need be. |
| I have a complete MT6700 rifle and love it. I do want to get the barrel threaded for a flash hider, it just doesn't look right without one, at least not to me. Mine was a safe queen with 15 rounds through it when I bought it a few years back. I am not real popular because I love HBARS, I always have, and the 6700 with my handloads is the most accurate AR that I have shot. I have a TA31RCO mounted on top. I too think the price is high, and since HBARS aren't the flavor of the month you might want to counter at a lower price. He may just accept it, doesn't hurt to try. All the info given above is spot on for that upper. |

Thanks for the info. Just for kicks, what would be a good price?
And while I have your attention, what really got me going on this all the talk of a rifle you can bet your life on. I see it a lot, especially in these forums. I do plan on taking some carbine classes next year. I guess my question is what exactly are guys worried about when they say "brand xxx is a fine shooter/plinker/fun gun, but don't use it if you are in combat"? What part of the gun are the worried about malfunctioning? The BCG? FCG? Gas tube? I'm trying to figure out if I can just replace parts on my current rifle, instead of just buying a new one. Thanks again, this is really helping. |

If you're asking here in AR15.com that upper without rails, optics and bipod would be worth probably less than $500, and a lot of members in no ban states would pass on it, it would be worth more in states with their assault weapons ban laws.
Myself I would pass if I'm going to use that upper in a SHTF, I would just prefer a lightweight or M4 type carbine that have good reliability records like Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense, LMT, etc. Without getting a complete upper you could just upgrade your parts on your AR with a complete BCG from the brands I mentioned also add brands like Rainier Arms ThunderBolt, PSA Premium grade (not their standard grade), AR Performance, Spike's Tactical, etc., also change your lower parts kit with higher quality Daniel Defense, Colt, Spike's, etc. Read this summary on page 49 of this thread "What Parts Break in a Carbine Course? - Thread Summaries on page 48 - 49" it will show the most likely parts to mess up in an AR when the firearm gets stressed like in a SHTF situation. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/360169_What_Parts_Break_in_a_Carbine_Course_____Thread_summaries_are_on_pages_48_49.html&page=49 |
