I have an older circa 1994 Colt Sporter HBAR rifle that I purchased before the 1994 Ban went into effect. I have recently been looking at doing some updates to the rifle and trying to figure out costs. I have heard a couple of conflicting reports about what my options are when it comes to this rifle. I am very interested in adding a new upper to the Colt Lower, however I heard that this lower isn't compatible with any of the newer style flat top uppers such as the Noveske below:http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin/imcart/bigpic.cgi?i=u-lrlp-556-sb_1d.jpg
I guess I checking to see if anyone might have some insight as this is the first time I have looked at doing this. Hoping someone might have some insight into this question as I have heard anything from don't do it, The rifle is worth the investment to you can't do it and the rifle is junk. Of course when they say that, they are more then willing to take it as a trade in. Ryan |
![]() Here is the pic you were trying to post. If your Colt Lower has a large pivot pin and a pinned sear block you have to do a few things to make this work. You will have to use a semi auto bolt carrier to clear the sear block and an adaptor like http://blackrifleworks.com/colt-ar15-universal-front-conversion-pin-p-164.html?osCsid=d9aaef109fe11c82cbea3cf33b470b65 to make it work. |

A Sporter made in 1994 should have the standard size pivot pin so you should be good to go there.
The problem is the pinned in sear block. That's that pesky little piece of steel that sticks up out of your lower receiver. It will interfere with an M16 style bolt carrier. Should this be a problem, there are a couple of way around it. A) Use a shaved/half circle style bolt carrier like what your rifle came with. B) Remove the sear block. I did this to one of my Colts with careful use of a Dremel tool and the results turned out great. |

Thanks for the tips. I am less then confident in my skills as a gunsmithing dremel surgeon. I decided over the weekend that I'm just going to order a lower and then build what I want. I think I'm going to try and pickup a POF lower. I like the ambidextrious features. I just ordered a POF Recon model complete rifle so I may try for a .308 lower.
