I am looking into this rifle along with the 6920 and would like to know what the major differences are. I know the roll marks are different on the lowers. Can anyone tell me if the 6400 ships with a standard M16 BCG? Or is it an AR15 carrier group? Also, what about the compensator? Is the barrel threaded underneath? The barrel looks like its the same as the 6920, but only with a compensator? Anyone know for sure. I know the stock and receiver extension have to be changed over... any other differences? What about the FCG? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

Thanks for the replies. Nice rifles! So other than the compensator, stock and possibly the BCG, everything else should be the same as the 6920, correct? If I get one, I am thinking it might be easier to just change the barrel than deal with threading the one on there. Any suggestions?

I had mine threaded. It might be cheaper to have it threaded instead of buying a new barrel, though you could sell your barrel and recoup some cash. Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Maybe even buy a 14.5" barrel and have a Phantom or Vortex permanently attached. I am also considering a free float hand guard if I get the rifle. Anyone know if these FSB's are as big of a pain as BCM? Was the castle nut on your stock staked? I need to get a stock wrench... just wondering how hard it was to remove. Thanks! |
| Colt parts are good parts. That's the reason you bought a Colt right? I wouldn't replace a good barrel from a "Tier 1" (I hate those terms and here I am using them) manufacturer with anything else. Send the upper up and have it chopped or threaded by ADCO and keep the good Colt barrel that is on it. |

So how can I tell which BCG my rifle has? I bought the 6400 a couple of months ago and can admit knowing next to nothing about ARs when I purchased it. Thanks. this pic should help you pic is from quarterbore.com http://www.quarterbore.com/images/boltcarrier.gif Sweet! - mine's the M-16. That's the preferred one, right? Thanks for the picture! |

very nice sir, very nice. how well does the factory comp work on those? I honestly never fired one with thw comp on a carbine I thought it worked very well. Made follow-up shots a bit easier I found. It isn't that noisy to the shooter either, although if you're standing to the side you won't be happy. I'd imagine that sound deflection off a wall would suck though. |

If I changed barrels, I would not use anything other than Colt parts. This rifle will be kept all Colt original. I just thought it might be easier to change the barrel to a 6920 barrel than to re-thread the barrel that is on the rifle. Does anyone know how long this barrel actually is? If the compensator is removed and the barrel is threaded, will it still be 16+ inches? |

Shawn,
I'm pretty sure that it's just a Jerry Miculek compensator, adapted to be pinned on to the barrel, but they do sell thread on versions. Listed at PK Firearms Quoted:

As long as you don't shorten it as well when you thread it, it will continue to be legal length. You may, however, if you look into getting it threaded, you might also consider also having the skim cut (the small stepdown before the flash suppressor) added as well, it doesn't really do a whole lot in terms of function, but it makes it look better, IMHO. HTH, ~Augee Good info here - Thanks! One other question that I have is the 6400 does not seem to have a bayonet lug on it either. Not a big deal, but I was wondering if everyone's came without a bayonet lug? Thanks! |
| I just received the rifle and I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations. Very nice rifle. Appears to be a very well put together. I do have a couple of other questions. If I decide to send the barrel to be threaded and I wanted to have the last "notch" placed into the barrel, would the barrel have to be removed? Or can they lathe the last cut without removing the barrel? Once this is done, what would be the refinishing options to match the original Colt finish? Other question: How does the sling mount on the FSB attach? Does the FSB have to be removed to take it off? |

That was my plan. I read in another thread where someone had the extra notch placed into the barrel and so I thought I would ask. I will probably just send the upper to ADCO and have them remove the comp and thread it. It's too bad because I actually like the comp that is on there. Too bad its not available as a thread-on. |

I believe the Miculek is available in standard threading if you really like the 6400 comp. |

If you want them to reprofile that last section of barrel, I can't imagine it will cost very much if they are already threading and reparking it anyhow. It doesn't really buy you anything of course. |
