This is no doubt a tired question but I need to ask anyways. I bought a new Colt Match target AR-15 in 2001 chambered in .223.  I have only fired .223 loads thru it. My question, of course, is can I safely fire 5.56 rounds thru it.  If anyone knows the answer it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've heard of these being marked .223 on the receiver and 5.56 on the barrel.
Can you see any marks on the barrel ?
Might have to take the handguard off.

All Colts are chambered in 5.56.

IIRC there were a few old Colts chambered in .223, but they were clearly marked so on the side of the upper receiver.

All colts are 5.56 chambered and designed for higher presure mil loads. They have always had same chamber but were marked .223 because US doesn't use metric. Civilian guns are marked 223 Mil/Le/export marked 556. The guns marked .223 on upper were done so to avoid confusion with the 7.62x39 chambered uppers Colt made years ago.
