Hi Guys, this is my first post, but I've been reading here for quite some time. I bought a slick side upper w/ barrel at a gun show awhile back, but as the title says, it has the large front hole. I have the adapter bushing for the small hole lowers, but it spins and gets out of alignment easily. I have recently been thinking about building some type of a 601 or 604 clone with that upper, but I'm not sure what to do about a lower.
Is my only option to find a Large hole SP1 lower for sale, or would it be possible to modify a small hole lower to allow for the large colt pin? I do have access to some milling equipment, so i believe that i could pull it off if it were possible. I'm just worried about the lower receiver being to weak at the front lugs. I'm sure that it would be easier to just buy a new slick side upper from Nodak along with the lower, but i will still have that upper lying around just wanting to be used, and I'll be back to the same problem.... Any advice would be great. Sorry if this has been addressed before, I tried to search, but found nothing. |

I've been gluing my adapter bushings in place with black RTV with good results.....just degrease the bushing and inside the hole in the lugs for the best adhesion.
ETA: if you really want to keep your existing upper, but don't want to use an adapter, see if M60Joe would be interested in plugging and re drilling it to a small hole configuration His site shows this type of permanent bushing done to some lowers. I assume he can do uppers as well |

Just stick to using the bushing.
As stated above, you can just degrease and glue it into place. I have one that is held by CA glue (hobby grade stuff not the supermarket CrazyGlue). If I ever decide I want to remove it, it can be done with a quick soak in acetone. |

I have a set of those already, but I thank you both for the links.
What I'm asking is if anyone sells bushings such as M60joes  already made and ready to glue in so I can get away from using the offset pins. Stuck in a major city apartment away from my backwoods florida roots. No mill , and very few tools until I can get back home next year. But I'll probably just wait until then, or send it off to have the conversion done.

Quite a few but that's not really here, nor there. The lower I'm interested in doing the conversion on is pretty shot in the value department, so I'm not worried about hurting it's value further. It's going to be used for my Airforce mixmaster GUU-5/P project, and I'd like to use a 601 takedown pin with it. But I may just say hell with it and use a different lower.
I got nothing but time being stuck here, and I like to let my mind wander over all options. |

Stay away from those, they'll chew up the holes in your lower. 1- You can use the adapter bushing for the upper, but trim it down to fit the ears on the lower. You'll probably have to sand down the outside diameter a bit as well to fit. Then, loctite them into the lower so you can always remove if necessary. 2- Have member Heatnbeat machine you a custom 601-style pivot pin, and use a large hole SP1 upper as well. I did this on one of my 607's and it works well. |
