In my search for a base for the 3x20 Hakko Colt scope I bought recently, I came across this on eBay. An Ultralux 4x20 scope that looked to be the same profile as the originals. Since I only needed the base, I couldn't go wrong for $34, even if it didn't fit. I got it in the mail today (after ordering it on Thursday), and I'm actually impressed by it. I thought it would weigh nowhere near what my originals weigh, and that the glass would be blurry or hazy. Wrong on both accounts. It feels and looks almost identical to the originals, and the glass is extremely clear with a nice duplex reticle. That said, I haven't shot with it, and if I do, it will likely be a while. The purpose of this is to say that if you are in search of a "clone" scope that is the correct profile and has the correct appearance (and may actually shoot well), these are still there, as the seller has multiple of them. If anyone is interested in any more photos of the scope or comparison photos with the 3x20 and 4x20 scopes, just say it, and I'll try to take them.

Thanks for sharing.  I saw those but was a little suspect as you were.  Might have to give one a try.  I have some Ultralux mounts that aren't bad.

Did the mount interchange?

It's good now you say, but give it six months & you'll more than likely start to see little weird flecks of black stuff inside the glass...

Barksa makes a similar looking type scope, though it is more expensive...

I don't say it's good now, as I haven't shot with it. I was conveying that these are available (for $34) for those who don't want to buy or are looking for a placeholder until they find an original. I am curious to see how they do for others. Looking at the one in your link, it's close, but this one is a dead ringer for my Hakko/Colt 4x20. The only differences I see are the phillips head screws and the elevation turret cap.

I didn't try the caps from this one on the other scopes, but I will say that the caps do not interchange between my two originals, so there was some variation.

What brand?

Again I will say that I have no idea how these will do on a rifle, but I am giving my impressions from simply handling mine and giving the word that they are available for those who may be in search.

ETA: I did try to screw the focus ring off to see if it would, but just like my originals, it has some kind of retainer that wouldn't let me do so. It even made the same clicking sound as the Hakko/Colts. That was a good sign.

I doubt the Chinese lenses and knockoff scopes will ever rival the Japanese mfg Hakko lenses/scopes from the 1960s thru the 1980s. Same with the Japanese cameras, Nikon, Canon for example.

86HMMWV,

Thanks for posting this info. I have been looking for over a year for a mount for my Colt 3X20. Someone had put it on a AR-180 mount. I'll keep my fingers crossed until it gets here that this mount will fit my Colt scope.

Thanks again,

You're welcome. Again, for those who bought them (they're all gone now), please post your impressions here. I may put one of them on one of my rifles to see if it's worth anything. If it is, it will replace the Hakko on my IDF carbine.

This scope even if it only last a year or two will still beat my kiddo borrowing my IDF Eyal carry handle scope off my M16A1 clone, that he likes to put on the 727 clone I built him.

Larry/M-614 that someone who put the Colt 3X20 scope on the AR-180 mount just might of been ArmaLite Costa Mesa CA. Might be worth something to someone that's into the AR-180. I'm sure a couple members have noticed a few ArmaLite scopes on AR-15 mounts.

The thing is, I have no clue what brand mine is.  My Dad bought my Colt A2 20"er when he lived in AZ a LONG time ago.  Well, in the 90's.  And this scope came with it. I have the info sheet that came with it and it's totally void of any markings of manufacture.  It LOOKS just like the one you posted.  And IMHO, it works.  How rugged, I don't know. But the housing feels tons thicker than any regular (leupold, etc) scope I've deal with.

It weighs 12 ounces and I've had good luck with using it.  Every time I mount it on something and shoot it, it seems to work like it's supposed to.  I did test the BDC once at closer range, to see if it was useable and it seemed to raise poi in a very linear manner, vertically.  I have not tested at distance.  But I'm not really sure what the BDC is supposed to coincide with.  Probably 55 grain M193 out of a 20" barrel.

It does have a bit of a downside.  If you want to get a totally clear sight picture, you gotta have your face a bit close.  And sometimes the charging handle bonks me in the lip.  Just a small annoyance.  Plus you can just move back a hair and let the outside of the glass get a little dark.

Another downside is it's pretty loose in my Colt A2 carry handle.  But as far as I can tell, it's the gun.  Other carry handles I use, it mounts tighter.  For the colt I put two layers of painters tape on the base.  For others I just put one.  It's plenty tight and not moving.  I did also use aluminum from a can once, and that worked too.  And probably a bit more stable.

Personally, I like it.

1 particular shooting session at 50 yards

Another session at 100 yards:

And someday I'll test it on this one again, but don't have pics of any range session in that config:

@JJREA , will you take pictures of the elevation and windage turrets with the caps removed? I noticed that mine has a strange font in comparison with the Hakko/Colts, so if yours is the same, that would be pretty tell-tale to yours being one of these. Thanks for the information and pictures you posted.

Did you say your adjustments have clicks?  Mine do not.  But if it's the same I suppose they could've updated that.

I just weighed mine again.  12.2 ounces.  Actually it bounces from 12.2 and 12.3.

I should take a pic of the reticle.  It's like you say, a duplex and not a point like some of the genuine Colt Scopes.

Yup. Arfcom responsible for separating me from more of my money. I just scooped one up for $39.99 with free shipping. It is a very close look-a-like to a Colt 4x20. I don't get to shoot much, so hopefully it lasts me a while.
Will look good on my Sporter 2 carbine. Though the Aimpoint 3000 on it now looks pretty nice as well.

You have one of these, because that is EXACTLY like mine. And I haven't tried to rotate the windage or elevation adjusters. The bullet drop compensator does positively engage the detent, though, which is a very good sign.

Yes, my BDC turret is a positive click at each mark.  Has a click all the way too, way past 500.  Like it's for 1000 or something.  LOL.

So I guess mine is an ultralux.  Is your sheet real generic too?  Or does it have a spec sheet in it?  I'll see if I can dig mine out and take a pic for reference here.

86hmmwv, I just bought one of the scopes you got.  Thanks for the heads up.  I too have trouble spending the $$$$ for an original Colt one!

My SP1 1/7 twist Carbine clone got pressed into Coyote buster duty.  Some shots will be out to 150 yards or so.  That scope will be perfect.  Sure the MK262 MOD1 77 grainers will have a different bullet drop, but I'll sight it at 150.  Like you say $39, you can't get hurt!  It does look virtually identical to the colt 4X scope, unlike NC Stars and Barska that look similar.  I really wish I had bought one of the Israeli scope when APEX had them a few years ago.

You're welcome, imarangemaster. I am anxious to see how they do for others (I see already for JJREA). I won't be shooting for a week or two, and the rifle I want to shoot already has a scope mounted, so I won't have a chance to see myself just yet. As it stands right now, I'm not taking the base off of either of mine, which is ironic, because that was the reason for buying it.

Yeah, mine has the same phillips screws instead of flat head too, for the base.  I always wanted to try and figure out what size rings might work for that to mount to a flat top. But then I started pricing 35 and 38mm rings and I was like WAAAAAAAAAAA?   I don't know if either would work anyways.  Plus it's like you'd have to just use one on the front end because it does get bigger towards the rear.

Anyways....  Yeah, mine has worked several times.  It's never lived on a gun for a long period of time though.  I guess maybe I need to mount it on the A2 and give it another whirl for fun.   Would be nice to get some really good groups from a gun with it mounted to have some data to back up my theory that: you don't really NEED a flat top in order to shoot well.  Since "OH MY GOD CHIN WELD, YOU'LL DIE" comments know no bounds.  No doubt it's not optimum for shooting tiny groups.  But definitely minute of man, there's no reason to fret.  Or for imarangemaster's case, minute of Coyote.....

Just received my UltraLux 4X20 this afternoon. I took the mount off and installed it on my Colt scope. The good news is that it looks like it will work. The bad news is the fit isn't exact.

My Colt scope diameter (on the section that the base mounts) is 1.377", the UltraLux is 1.334" for a difference of .043". The four base attachment screws are spaced just different enough that there is a small gap between the bottom of the Colt scope and the UltraLux mount.

Neither the windage or elevation covers would fit the Colt scope.

I'll try it out next range trip. Worst case scenario is that I put everything back and have a $33 UltraLux scope.

In the late 1960s the Colt Hakko scopes were selling for around $65, considering inflation that's quite a deal to get what looks like a similar scope today for $40-50.
