I have the opportunity to aquire 2 Colt AR-15s at an extremely good price. A friend was left a small collection of weapons and has no need/want to keep them. Among them are these Colts. He knows absolutely nothing about them so he can not even tell me which varient they are. I got the serial numbers from him, but I can't seem to locate anything on the prefixes. Could anyone help me out?

The serieal number prefixes are:
CSLxxxxxx
GLxxxxxx

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the Welcome!

Not being new to online forums I already gave the site a pretty good look over and had previously reviewed the link you provided before posting my question. It does not provide any information on Colt serial numbers prefixed with CSL or GL unfortunately. It seems that list was last updated in 1999, this may be the reason.

With any luck I will be able to arrange a "show and tell" with these ARs in the not to distant future. I plan to take pictures of them as well. My last purchase from him was for a Colt Match Target HBAR and a .45 caliber glock, both firearms for an even $1,000. Hopefully I'll be able to work out something close to that for these two.

I did finally get an answer to my question. I called up Colt customer service and sweet talked the girl I spoke with. She said normally they will only give out the year the rifle was produced, anything else was a pay service. I managed a little more information than that.

Colt AR-15 with a serial number prefixed by the letters CLS is a Match Target "Lightweight" this one happened to be model MT6530.

The other serial number I was give had a typo in it, I was given GL, but it should have been GC, which is a Government Carbine.

Mystery is solved! Bet I can get both for an even $1,400 too
