Can anyone help ID the year of manufacture, tell me if it was a pre-ban lower, and if these were ever offered with a thin barrel upper?

COLT Sporter Target serial # 017123

Thanks fellas for any assistance, my google search was weak.

I'm assuming it starts with "ST"? If so, definitely pre-ban (1994).

The Colt Sporter Target rifles (6551) came from the factory with a government profile barrel (without a bayonet lug.)

We need the letter prefix to serial number to properly date it but it should have the barrel Molon posted and be a preban rifle.

Thanks boys. Am researching for a friend, I called him back, yes serial # starts with "ST",

I think it has a LW barrel on it and he wanted to know if it was original or replaced. Thanks!

As the picture shows the barrel will be thin under the handguards and thick front the front sight forward if it's an A2 Gov't price, .75" at the sight block with a small step down just in front. It would also be marked C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 on top the barrel between the front sight and the flash suppressor. Mine also has HBAR just after the 1/7 so  there may be something else but I don't think the Gov't profiled barrels had more there.

Colt did use up as many old parts as it could so there is the possibility it's wearing an old 1/12 A1 profile skinny barrel and still be a factory build. This was a confusing, transitional time frame for Colt.

More details, or better yet, pics would really help.
