I posted a link yesterday on a few forums for folks I thought might be interested...I guess the sight managers thought I was spamming. I dont want to redirect you off this sight...its the best reference for AR 15 info on the web! That being said, I would love to share with you my experiences with a gas piston conversion...How I came to have one, disturbing wear that I observed, what I did to combat said wear, the results of my labor, and the performance of the rifle. Do me a favor, dont leave this sight, open a new tab and enter www.gaspiston-vs-di.com in your browser. Read my report (Its only 4 pages, mostly pics) and if your thinking of a conversion, its a great read...then close that tab and return here and post your thoughts. For the life of me I cant seem to get my pics and illustrations up on this sight. My site has "no sponsers" ask for "no money" and has "no memberships." Its just an old sight for my small business that I erased and started from scratch for this report. Thanks gentleman, looking forward to hearing your thoughts!!
All I can say is it looks like your system is beating the crap out of the tube.I have 2 Osprey systems and I dont have any carrier to extension contact at all..as in no tilt period. If your gonna keep that system maybe get an anti-tilt buffer that should stop it or change to a drop in Osprey its a drop in done right.I have 1500 rds through the first system and 400 on the second and no tube wear.
On the next two pages of the sight, I explained that I did get an H3 anti-can't buffer and Wolff XP spring. I buffed out the old damage with 3 grades of steel wool, took a file and gently rounded the bottom of the bolt carrier (instead of the tiny 45 degree bevel it has), and used synthetic grease in the tube. Then after 400 rounds shot at the range...no visible signs of wear at all. My sight has a home page, then a parts and modifications page, results page, then final analysis page....the links for all the pages are at the top of each page, with pics and illustrations of everything I did. Also, I can only speak for my rifle and the TNW drop in kit. I know there are several manufactures now selling them, some with 1 piece bolt carriers with "skis". I don't think the skis are needed, just a file and a little touch.
I went with red grease too...Mobile 1 synthetic. It is designed for more violent friction than it will ever receive in my buffer tube (even if it was full auto), so I figured I couldnt go wrong with it. Plus its only $6.99 (from the local auto parts store) for a tub that will last forever.

Carrier tilt is impossible with an anti-tilt buffer. Period. So is cam pin wear on the upper as well as uneven bolt head wear from the torque of unlocking under other-than-designed circumstances.
Just gotta make sure your lower has no sear block or mill it flush for disassembly purposes. |
