Welcome to the sport of NRA Highpower and CMP (the new name for DCM) competition!

You certainly couldn't go wrong with a BM or DPMS DCM-style rifle.  RRA also makes a nice unit.  You might save a little money if you purchase a reputable, but inexpensive lower and then add a BM/RRA/DPMS/CLE/etc competition upper.  Others can steer you in the direction of cheap lowers.  You also need a Turner Saddelry NM sling and a good jacket from Creedmoor (I recommend the ventilated Hardback).

I shoot a Colt lower w/ Jewell trigger and a BM upper that I sent to CLE (Compass Lake Engineering) for a full CMP match modification (1-8" match barrel, windage adjustable FSB, match rear sights, CMP float tube, etc).

It's late here in Germany, or I'd write more . . . best of luck!

The tabbed-out dude above me gave you all the info you need.  I just thought I'd add that you should definitely buy and not build for CMP as it is a well-solved problem, i.e. manufacturers know just how to set you up for maximum effectiveness, so let them do it

Both are excellent choices, but I have had a fair ammount of luck with Rock River Arms.

If you had to pick between a jacket or sling, would you get the sling first?  I'm sure I'll eventually get both, I think I'm going to ask for these for my birthday and Christmas gifts this year, but I plan on shooting some matches between those times.  I just shot my first match today, and now I'm hooked!

Dude, Smallbore

Build your basic skills, learn to shoot prone with a sling, sight alignment, breath control, smooth trigger using an economical, easy shooting platform....get comfortable with a shooting jacket.

I know double and triple distinguished shooters still shooting smallbore to master their technique.

AR's are great fun. Build your basic shooting skills first.

Boring but true!

Party On!

SLING!  The jacket helps, but the sling is critical for learning position shooting.

Thanks for the back-up, bro . . . but don't be jealous . . . I went to Germany thinking that I'd get into the Box, and while I might have the Triple Canopy, they didn't tell us that our Battalion doesn't really go into CENTCOM.  We're stuck in the EUCOM AOR and now I'll probably never have the honor of having served alongside my brethren in the Big Show.  I've been to some cool places and done some cool stuff, but my 1793 Springfield musket is still cocked and doesn't have the pretty oak leaf framing!

That's actually pretty good advice, too.  I did some time working projects in the S-3 shop at the USAMU as a new LT, and they let me go shoot in the afternoons . . . I thought I'd get a match 1911 or M9 and they gave me a Steyr air pistol instead.  But it paid huge dividends!
