Hello everyone,

As you can see I am new to the site and am very excited to have finally become a part of the page I have heard so much about. I have finally decided to start my first build. I am doing this on a semi budget so I can't buy the best of the best, however I want to avoid the junk as well. I have stumbled upon a complete upper that I am interested in, two actually. Both of which are listed on the Red Barn Armory site. The main one I am interested in the the quad rail 16inch barrel however the single rail is starting to grow on me. My main question is if anyone that has experience with either of these is willing to take the time to tell me their thoughts on them. Also I am wondering about the pros and cons of the quad vs single rail hand guard. I plan on having a light and a fore grip on the rifle.

Any feedback will be much appreciated. I have attached the link below as well. The two I am interested in are the first two listed.

Thanks in advance everyone and I am looking forward to learning tons from this great site.

I would wait and look at palmetto state armory's web site for labor day sales.  I only say that because I have never heard of the companies.  Of course I have heard of YHM etc for the handguards just not the receiver maker, BBL or BCG.

Nor have I. Not that I'm an expert however I would like to think I know a quite a few misc companies. I was hoping to have this done by early September because then I will start traveling to Canada very frequently for waterfowl hunting and a lot of my spending money will be going to that.

1 - Whats your budget?

2 - Whats your intended use?

3 - Do you have the tools and know-how to assembly your own upper, or local access to someone that does?

I would say that I could spend around $400.00 on the upper all together.

I will use it primarily for coyotes as well as the range. However I will happily use it whenever China decides to come collect their money.

I have helped a couple people put theirs together however if I have any questions, I have multiple people I can go to for assistance.

If you're interested at all in building an upper, thats what I would recommend, especially on a budget.  That will let you look for the best deals on individual components that you may prefer or that would fit your intended use better than a pre-built package.

Do you have a lower already?  If not, AimSurplus carries Anderson upper/lower sets for about $80 (plus shipping and FFL fee).  There are a lot of barrels to choose from and rails too.

Barrel...I would go with a 16" mid-length.  So many to choose from, do you have a desired finish?  Stainless, chrome lined, melonite?

Rail...take a look at ALG, great quality rails for reasonable prices...I have a few and like them a lot.

Sights? Optic?

...see what can of worms you're into now?

LOL!

Its fun though, enjoy.

I HATE quad rails, on my 2nd deployment I ended up with a M16A2 with a quad rail. The "hand guards" sucked ass as they rarely locked in well enough to stay put, and made it feel "fat" in the hand. And if you didn't use them, your hands would get somewhat raw from the rails. If I were going to replace my A2 handguards with something, it would be a free float tube that was mostly rounded but had a rail on top. And modular in the sense I could add a piece of rail wherever I wanted so I could attack a light.

Here are a couple I would recommend taking a serious look at. They do not come with the BCG or CH, so I have provided a link for those.

PSA 16" mid-length Lightweight

PSA 16" mid-length SSK

PSA Premium BCG

PSA CH 7075-T6 mil-spec forged aluminum

If you can live without the free-float handguard, you can get into a complete upper for around $400.

PSA 16" mid-length w/ CG & CH

PSA 16" Premium M4 w/ BCG & CH

Thanks so much for the links. I very well might go with one of these as they seem to be a better product all around.

These are some of the better products they have and they are of good quality. That is why I listed just these for you since they were either below or just above your budget.

I think you're comparing a bore treatment with a barrel making process.

Partially correct

There is no such thing as a melonited, chrome lined barrel

Nor is there a CHF melonited barrel

At least, not that I've ever seen

The standard 5.56 version of this goes on sale for $299 often.  This is a great deal because the handguard alone sells for $189.
