I'm looking to convert my 16" direct impingement AR15 to a short stroke gas piston free Floated barrel gun. I'm looking at the Superlative Arms Short stroke gas piston retro conversion kit.

https://suparms.com/collections/retrofit-piston-kits/products/750-adjustable-piston-system-mid-length-clamp-on-melonited-low-pro-ar15

and replace barrel with a Faxon Gov/SOCOM profile 16" Barrel and a Geissele Mk14 12" FFRS.

https://geissele.com/super-modular-rail-mk14.html

The Marines are adapting the M27 IAR as its Service weapon and I guess thats the way the wind is blowing. its beginning to look like Direct impingement guns are on their way out. Any comments on this idea. has anybody alreay tried this and if so what where the results

Although this is the piston forum, I'm sure you'll be flamed for even stating the DI system is on its way out...
But, have you considered this:

I'm hoping they produce a M27 clone....

Just purely from my estimates, but the government spent about 3k per M27 rifle. In the civilian sector, if you're looking to make a clone from the MR556, you're looking to spend roughly 4500-5000 range.

You can still use your AR15 lower, but you'll need:

The bayonet lug: https://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/G36E-Bayonet-Lug-Assembly-HK-German-181p354.htm

The 11" rail which runs about $450 bucks area.

The Trijicon TA11MDO: https://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product3.php?pid=TA11SDO-CP which runs about 2k

The buttstock https://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/HK-416-Factory-E1-Rear-Stock-Commercial-134p15426.htm

I’ve watched your video about a dozen times as I’m collecting parts for my IAR build.

Did you ever video your post build test video? I subscribed to your thread; but, it was eventually shuffled off to the archive.

I have been out-of-town or working on our property. Building new berms behind the skeet range. Will start back video reviews in a couple of weeks. This will be one of my first tests.

I've never been a 'clone guy' but this could be an exception, and for once the government seems to be doing something positive as the result of needs assessed in the field.
I actually will never make this clone. Since I have no intention of having an NFA rifle or a HBAR 20" piston rifle, my regular 16" DI AR with ACOG and rifle stock will suffice - this new rifle is over 10 lbs.
Looks like it is set up for reliability and durability with the heavy barrel and gas piston action. There has been a lot of 'mission creep' with it as commanders realize the potential, and apparently the latest is that they plan to outfit every squad with them. WIKI says the government cost is $1300.
As long as we have combat units in the Middle East, especially Afghanistan, I guess this will be ideal. However I don't expect the Marines to get rid of their other rifles so fast - they could easily be deployed in an urban or jungle warfare situation where the larger, heavier automatic rifle might be viewed as a liability for every trooper.
