I posted in GD about conversions for some Surefires I had lying around and wanting to upgrade: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1352596_LED_flashlight_conversions.html

What I discovered was it was a bit more complicated than simply swapping out the old P60s.

I have a D3 (9V) which is going to replace my G2 as my car flashlight and am looking at a Malkoff M61, just not sure which version. This is the simple problem.

I now have 2 rifles an AR 15 carbine length rail and a SIG 551. I want to put lights on both of them and am not sure how to choose which.

I have an M951 weaponlight, G2 Led and E2D incandescent to choose from and all need upgrades.

From what I have read it requires modification to install a Malkoff in the M951 and the upgrades I can find locally, Wolfeyes Q5 Cree D26 170 lumens, suffer from overheating. Would the surefire P60LED if installed in the M951, be suited to use on a rifle? Would it be bright enough at 80 lumens?

As for the G2 Led I know Malkoffs heads can fit even though I worry about the polymer body, and the E2D will need a KX2C conversion from Surefire, but I can only pick one to put on the AR.

Will the KX2C on an E2D be too bright at 200 lumens?

Which Malkoff should I put in the G2? The M61L; 175 lumens for 5 hours, or the M61LL; 100 Lumens for 10 hours?

I know it's a lot of questions but I'm a bit confused by all the options. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can lend.

"I have a D3 (9V) which is going to replace my G2 as my car flashlight and am looking at a Malkoff M61, just not sure which version."

I would choose a Nailbender 3 mode (h-m-l) drop-in

"From what I have read it requires modification to install a Malkoff in the M951 and the upgrades I can find locally, Wolfeyes Q5 Cree D26 170 lumens, suffer from overheating. Would the surefire P60LED if installed in the M951, be suited to use on a rifle? Would it be bright enough at 80 lumens?"

I would choose a single mode drop-in running a Cree XP-G LED at 1.4 amps. Modifications may be necessary with all aftermarket drop-ins to fit M951.

"As for the G2 Led I know Malkoffs heads can fit even though I worry about the polymer body, and the E2D will need a KX2C conversion from Surefire, but I can only pick one to put on the AR."

I would choose the Malkoff VME head with M61 drop-in for the E2D.

"Will the KX2C on an E2D be too bright at 200 lumens?"

I don't think so

"Which Malkoff should I put in the G2? The M61L; 175 lumens for 5 hours, or the M61LL; 100 Lumens for 10 hours?"

The M61LLL if you can find it

Make life easier and buy a new Surefire 6PX Defender - 200 lumens from Cree XP-E LED and clicky tailcap (lightly press for momentary, press further for constant-on)

G2
PLS-1 on the G2 will allow it to slide on and off a rail just by lifting the spring loaded lever to raise the bars that lock it in the rail.  A M61 will drip right in but there may be heat issues but some of that can be alleviated with a bezel from a regular 6P.  PLS-1 is under 40 bucks at Mills Fleet Farm here in MN.

E2D
Easiest E2D upgrade is a Malkoff VME head and M61 and it defangs the front end of your E2D.  This guy will defang your switch so you can then EDC it if you want.  There are also a couple mounts out there to use E2 on rail.

951
Surefire P60 LED would be bright “enough” but Malkoff is the best.  If there are problems with fit/run/heat in a Malkoff are problems in a 951 I don’t see the P60 as being an alternative because there is no way it is as durable as a Malkoff and it is made to fit the standard incan body not the 951.

A frosted lens will dissipate the hotspot and cut bounce back if the glare/bounceback from the hotspot  is too much for you in any LED.   I have a Romisen RC-A4 with a 3mode MCE Pill at around 350 lumens from a single 16340.  MCEs have a lot of artifacts in their beam. The frosted lens cuts a little output but it lights 180 degrees in front of me.  No hot spot, just bright in center dissipating to the outer edges.

Illumination Supply has High Color Rendition Index (HCRI) M61 Malkoff drop-ins.  Smaller output due to tint but it’s worth it.  You miss more with the other LEDs out in the woods due to color.

Possible fix here.
Otherwise Malkoff has a ring for use with shock proof heads perhaps this would work as well.  It’s only a dollar for the ring.  May or may not have to take the plastic piece at the bottom of the head out.  Ask Malkoff.  Just call him up.  He’s easy to deal with.

You could also just get a 6P and drop in the M61, add the PLS-1 and the switch from the 951 and sell the 951 head and body.  This would may be the easiest “surefire” way.

Check your PMs.

Thanks for answering, I should mention that the the D3 is a 9V, I can't seem to find a Nailbender drop in to match it.

I had though about the 6PX but with a bit of reading there was mention that they were not suited for weapon mounting, though in the Pic thread I saw loads of the G2X and 6PX being used. So what's the skinny?

Thanks saw the PM.
I saw the VME head and M61 combo for the E2 but it seems overly complicated for a moron like me. I use an E1B for an EDC.
I already have the metal head on my G2 and found a clicky tail cap for it aswell, all I would need is the drop in. As for mounts Gear sector makes one for both the E series and G2 so I am sorted there.
I didn't realize that the Mod for the M951 was that simple, there was mention of a dremel before . But if its as simple as adding a couple of springs and removing some plastic seems like a solution for me. I should mention the M951 is going on the Sig 551 which has a 12inch rail so size isn't an issue for the light.
ETA: I didn't realise what a VME head was I though it was a differnet size heat sink drop in that I would need to swap out the guts of a M61 into. The High Color Rendition Index (HCRI) M61 Malkoff drop-ins are these aren't they https://illuminationsupply.com/m61-219-p-162.html

I don't blame you for liking the E1B.  I love the feel of my E2E with the VME head.  The feel of the knurling and clicky switch is just perfect for Rogers hold.  The original head instead of the VME makes it hide in slacks just a hair better.
I'm considering a single 18350 size for the VME and modify the original head on the E2E for somewhere between 500-700 lumens.

Like I said.  Call Malkoff, ask him about the adapter ring he sells for shock absorbing heads and his opinion on the deal.  He may or may not know your specific model and it's uses but hell at 1 dollar for the ring and you already have the light what could go wrong.  Do you have the springs/burned out P60 incan lamp?

Yep I have a couple of old P60s I can cannibalize. I may order one Malkoff and try it out before I convert the rest, it will give me perspective on how bright I may need and what CRI I might need.

Would the M61 W serve the same purpose as the HCRI? Or is it the same thing and I just don't realize?

I'm not sure but he may have switched over to the HCRI XPG which is the 90CRI LED.  In the past W has just been a warmer tint but not necessarily HCRI rated.  Of course the HCRI desgnation is something I've only seen lately.  Some companies have advertised 80 and 85 as "HCRI"  You'd have to ask Maldoff him to be sure if it's the 90HCRI LED now or not.  I had two sent to him for a Maglite unit and still have the second one for possible new project.

Well it's advertised that they are 80 CRI. I'll contact them and ask their advice.

Thanks for the help.
