Hello Folks,

Just joined the Forum because I became a proud owner of a Colt AR15A2 Sportster 2 rifle. My question is the following. Is it worth purchasing the 22lr kit for the rifle to shoot cheaper ammo, or getting a 22lr semi auto rifle instead? Both seem to come up to the same price.
Your opinions well be greatly appreciated.

I have a .22 conversion and I love it - its always in my range box.  I find I shoot it more than my .22 rifle.

I like it because I can practice with my AR for cheap & use it at those indoor '.22 only' ranges.

The only issue is its realistically limited to 25 yards - but I shoot scaled targets so I don't see that as much of a problem.

If you want somethig to plink with (particularly out to 100 yards) then look at getting a Ruger 10/22.  But for practice I think the conversion kit is hard to beat.

I can get 1000 rounds of winchester .223 ball for $150.00 at the gun show.  i would say buy in bulk and shoot the AR.  or get a 10-22.  you can find a used one for about the same price.  no, no i take that back get the conversion, but with the 10-22 you will have an extra rifle if one breaks but it won't be an AR.  hum, that sure is a quandary.  good luck.

Depends on what you want to accomplish with the .22 rifle.

If you want to practice shooting the AR and save money, then the kit will pay for itself in about 1200 rounds.

If you just want to plink and don't care if the "manual of arms" is the same, go with the rifle.  Most any .22 rifle will be at least twice as accurate as the conversion kit.  It'll also save you time cleaning.  The gas tube in the AR blows crap all over the inside of the upper so you'll have to do a thorough cleaning before you shoot .223s again.

Thanks a lot guys for your imput. It was mainly to do the combination of plinking at 25yds and shooting the AR. I think I'll buy .223 ammo in Bulk and keep the plinking to my Jager AP-74 22LR rifle. (see link fo photos http://mem.tcon.net/users/5010/5491/m16photos.htm)

Thanks a lot again guys..you've been a great help.
