All,
I will try and describe things with words and hopefully lack of pictures won't complicate things too much. My wife has a CavArms MKII with Bushmaster upper in SBR configuration. It has a three-picatinny rail gas block. I am trying to match our existing AR's which have got Mako TAL-4 vertical handgrips and Surefire G2's mounted in Mako MD-FSM. The MD-FSM mounts are simply perfect for our application except for one detail - They are made for 1" barreled flashlights and the Surefire G2 is like 1.04". Due to our other rifle configurations the lack of a perfect fit for a G2 has not been an issue until now, but with the SBR setup and the sharp edges on the aluminum MD-FSM being exposed because the bore is slightly undersized for use with a G2, I am looking at other options. I have looked at the Gear Sector Surefire G2 Offset Flashlight Mount (GS3100), and it looks really nice, but it does not look to have as much drop as the MD-FSM does. The Gear Sector GS3100 looks to have maybe an inch of drop and the MD-FSM has 1.5" from the center of the rail slot to the center of the bore for the flashlight. I need that 1.5", at the absolute minimum, for our application. Slightly more would be fine, less will not work. Can anybody here suggest a piece that is similar to the Mako MD-FSM but which will work with the Surefire G2 diameter? Absent that I have a VLTOR Scout Mount SM-G, but it alines the bore of the flashlight holder with the center-line of the picatinny rail. To use it I would need to come up with a way to obtain that 1.5" drop. VLTOR makes the Off-Set Scout Mount (SMQ-OCG), but this mount will be on a gas block picatinny and that Off-Set Scout Mount looks like it will place the end of the flashlight too close to the muzzle. So, absent something similar to the MD-FSM is there such a thing as a 1.5" picatinny rail drop? Something that could be attached to the rail and drops down 1.5" and provides another rail base on the opposite side? Again, this mount will be on a gas block picatinny and based on Magpul's admonition about not putting their wonderful backup sight on a gas block I am trying to avoid anything polymer for this flashlight mount. And yes, we have the option to change lights, but I have G2's all over the place and would like to use one of them rather than having to go buy another light. So, any suggestion for a mount, or even a drop to buy me 1.5" using my VLTOR, would be appreciated. Thanks, Phil |

Alien,
Wow, thanks for that thorough reply. I watched the video and went to their website. Two questions: 1 - On their site it says it is made from "Modified Acrylic PVC Alloy Thermoplastic with high impact and abrasion resistant qualities which have been proven to withstand the harshest environments..." Do you know how it would hold up to being mounted to a gas block picatinny rail? 2 - Upon first review of their site I don't see the numbers so absent my calling them and asking, do you know the measurement from the center of the rail slot to the center of the bore axis where the light is installed? Thanks, Phil |

afd77,
I have looked at slews of options. I was really hoping to stick with an identical, or close to identical, setup to what we currently have on our other AR's. My wife took a fancy to the CavArms lowers so we accumulated several colors (pink, blue, yellow and purple) and as the pink one was the first one it is the first build. It was intended to be very much like the other non-CavArms rifles with the exception that it is a registered SBR. With the SBR configuration there is not much space between the front of the mag well and the muzzle. My first real snag was that I very much like the simplicity of the Mako MD-FSM - It doesn't get simpler than CNC Machined 6061 Aircraft Grade Aluminum. The problem is the Surefire G2 is like 1.04" and the MD-FSM is made for 1" tube lights. So, does anybody know of a "drop" type picatinny adapter? The closest I have been able to find online is the "ProMag PM139 Offset Tactical Flashlight Mount" which...may work. No numbers are provided so I don't know how much drop there is. Here are links to pages with a picture: http://www.promagindustries.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PM139 http://www.atafa.com/sports/products/ProMag_Tactical_Mount_Black_Offset_Flashlight-224543.html http://www.promagindustries.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PM139 These adapters don't look very...elegant, but I could use the existing VLTOR adapter I have on hand. Has anybody ever seen of these ProMag things? Used it? Seen anything remotely like it? I still need to figure out how much drop it provides... Thanks, Phil |
You may consider our Elzetta ZORM Mount (shown below with an Elzetta ZFL-M60 Weapon Light). It provides ~1.5 inch offset and features all metal construction. Our Elzetta ZROC is another option. All Elzetta Mounts accomodate lights from 0.7 to 1.1 inches in diameter.![]() www.ELZETTA.com |
