Im thinking about grabbing a contour roam and mount to use for deer season coming up in the next month or so.

I'll mount it on my hat for when I'm using a bow and then mount it on my AR for when I use that.

My question is simple: are they worth the hype? After seeing all different youtube videos they seem pretty cool. But I want it to last and not to be a 200$ piece of junk.

Do you guys have any experience with them?

Just looking for any input and thoughts.

Thanks.

I got mine last winter when Amazon had them on sale for $89.

They work as advertised.  Reasonably durable (mine's held up to 12 ga. and 5.56 shooting).  Pretty good battery life (I get about 4 hours of record time).

Be aware that they have a strong fisheye lens;  Distant objects get small.  They're really designed, IMO, for a range of no more than 50 feet.

50 feet? Some of the videos I saw you could see   deer at what seemed to be a decent distance of 35 yards or so. If its only optimal that close then that seems like a waste...

I primarily use mine for flying and driving, but Ive mounted mine to a helmet before. Good video and they work well. This was taken in picture mode, but itll show you the lens performance were talking about.

I haven't used mine much, except for skiing last year. So far I'm happy with it and the fish eye isn't too bad. The field of view can be changed in the settings.

Some scenery from Cervinia, Italy with good lighting.

In the trees Zermatt, Switzerland with no sun.

I"m still not sure if I want to mount it on the gun or on a hat for hunting. There was a huge thread about the Roam when they were having the $89 sale around Christmas time.

Do you guys think it would be suitable for a deer-size target at no more than 30 yards?

That's all I'm planning really. Sometimes I take my AR in the woods when I hunt and others I take my bow. All I really want is to have good quality film for no more than 30 yards of a deer.

Yes, it should work well for that. Try it out with different settings to see which one looks best at that range. I'm guessing 1080p because that limits the field of view to 135 degrees which should reduce the fish-eye.
