I'm just about ready to move forward with my first planned build. Since I am new to this stuff, I will probably leave some stuff and that's ok.

Spikes Lower receiver with custom engraving
Larue Upper receiver (OR POF, VLTOR or SPIKES as well)
Larue FF Handguards (not sure on size yet but if I go 16" barrel probably a 12" guard)
Low profile gas block
16" Bead blasted barrel
Mil-Spec receiver tube
Magpul UBR (when it finally comes out)
Troy Flip BUIS
Not sure on muzzle device yet
Best LPK money can buy
Timney trigger

Still going with the .223 theme on the build above

OR

The same concept but running a Piston upper assembly with the Larue FF guards

OR

Same concept as above but with a Piston 6.8 Upper assembly with the Larue FFHG

Just brainstorming I guess.

I called and spoke with Spike today about getting a custom engraved lower done so I'm just trying to plan the rest of this out.

If this is your first AR, stick with 5.56.  You can always get another upper in a different caliber.  If you are mechanically inclined, should have no problem putting it together yourself.  However, if you don't have a firm understanding on how the rifle works, buy a complete upper and lower or pay to have someone who knows what they are doing build it for you.  Don't get too carried away with tricking it out.  Start simple, and switch out or add upgrades as you find out what works for you or become more knowledgeable about your options.  Don't bother with a piston upper unless you are planning on sticking a can on the front.

Finally, don't drink the koolaid.  Just because a bunch of people rave or don't rave about some product on this site, it doesn't necessarily mean anything.  Try to keep an open mind, read between the lines, and realize there are way too many people on this site with more money than brains.

Thanks, Jason.

I'm mechanically inclined and my father is retired Military so he has a decent grasp on the workings of these rifles although he's used to the old school M-16's.

I wasn't aware of the piston-can theory, thanks. I was just looking at the piston uppers for reliability and less down-time for cleaning but I don't mind breaking it down and spending some quality time with the ol' gal.

I'm pretty much sold on my build plans for the lower but I'm wanting to get everything planned out since I will be doing some custom colors and such.

Basically, I am going with a Spike's lower that he is going to have coated for me in Foliage green, then custom engraving and color filling. I'm then wanting to have whatever upper receiver I decide on coated in foliage green as well.

A 16" bead blasted barrel then I want to have a mil-spec buffer tube coated to match the bead blasted finish color of the barrel.

Essentially I am going for a Foliage green/ greyish-silverish look with probably black furniture.

It might sound corny to most but it's an image I've had burned into my mind for a few weeks now.

AFTER this build, I want to build a piston upper SBR with a can then build a retro model for my father.

It sounds good.
...But, I'm still mystified as to why you'd want to spend the extra cash on a piston upper though....are you gonna shoot 6000 rds before you clean it?

Don't think that just because some companies make piston uppers that the D.I. system is any less reliable...it isn't. Save the money for ammo - You'll need it.

Nah you're right, I think I'd be happy with a DI Middy setup afterall.
