I am looking into building my first AR15. I happen to be left-eye dominant and shoot south-paw ideally I would want to build a left handed rifle. I am aware that STAG makes a lefty rifle and upper half. The Nation’s gun show will be here in Northern Virginia next month and I was thinking about finding either a stripped lower or if I can find a decent complete lower. I have about $300 to spend. Is there anything special I should look for in a lower if I plan to attach a lefty upper? Also I have thought about having it chambered in .243 as I would like to hunt deer and possibly coyote with this rifle. Are the parts readily available to modify the rifle for .243? Thanks in advance, RangerVA |

You have a lot of learning to catch up before you go buy. First, with the Stag left hand uppers, you don't particularly need anything special in the lower, but a genuine Stag rifle would also come with an ambidextrous magazine release and selectors. As for the 243 chambering, that's going to be a problem. The AR-15 action won't take cartridges over 2.3" long due to magazine length restrictions. Now, there is a larger group of AR type rifles,, generally referred to as AR-10's which are built around the 308 Winchester cartridge. As the 243 is a necked down 308, you CAN have an AR-10 in 243. Armalite even makes them as a factory offering. There are no Left Hand AR-10's though. Now back to AR-15's... There are alternative calibers available to bump-up the power of the AR-15. Look into 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel. These are made to fit within the AR-15 magazine well, but do need different magazines so don't expect to find the mags for $12 like you can for the 223/5.556 mags. As for a left handed 6.8 or 6.5, that's a truly custom endeavor. If that turns out to be something you want, I could probably put it together for you. |
