A machinist coworker of mine made me a custom hammer for building lowers and other various jobs.  I thought I would share and see what you guys think.  The flat on the one side of the hammer gives you a little more clearance when driving the bolt catch roll pin and other tasks of that nature.

Flats on both sides, righty and lefty friendly!  I'm in for that, with double-flats (if that's possible)!

The only problem I have with brass hammer that size is they are too light.  Maybe that brass head with lead shot inside...

In. Let me know how much.

Update:  My friend said he would see how much he could make them for.  I am giving him the original tomorrow so he can copy it and come up with a price.  He also said he could do some lefties as well.  If the price is right I might just have him rip me a bunch of them so I can use/sell at will.  To AG, With the head being longer than most of the "gunsmith" hammers I have seen, paired with the allen head fastener and aluminum handle it feels considerably heftier than most of the other hammers I have tried/held.  I can probably get an actual weight if interested.  Let me know what you guys think.

More for AG.  I got the Digital scale out and the hammer weighs in at 9 OZ.  Comparing apples to apples the face is a 3/4" diameter, most other 3/4" diameter hammers weigh in at 2-4 OZ.  The tapered end measures 1/2" if anyone was interested.

if the hole can be made the same size on top and bottom, he wont need to make lefties, just flip the brass piece over to the other side.
6/11/2010 2:53:37 PM EDT

Should have a price for you guys in a couple days.  Lefties are possible.

If I don't see him tomorrow I will call him.  Hes pretty good about this stuff so it should be soon.  If this turns into something I might think about other models as well.  Any suggestions

Rather than make a lefty-specific one, why not just put the flats on both sides?
6/16/2010 2:33:11 PM EDT
[#27]
agree'd flats on both sides is the only way to go. you dont always have the option to hold things the way the hammer lines up with them.. looks great though!

[#28]
UPDATE:  Looks like I can get them to you guys for $40 plus shipping.  I cant buy the quantity to make them any cheaper at this point.  Please let me know if anyone would like one at this price and we can work something out.  Hand made in the good ol USA!

Any feed back at all guys?  Should I stop production?  I don't really need 15 hammers for myself.  I've only know how to use one at a time

Wondering if people got quiet when they saw the price. I expected it to fall right where it did. Small production numbers and piece work. I have no doubt it's worth every penny from a cost/production standpoint but I'm thinking some spoke before they new what they were getting into.

Well thats what I am thinking as well but at least say something so I know its not wanted at that price.  Brownells sells their 16oz hammer for $28.99 I figured roughly $10 more you can get an all metal hand made piece.  Oh well.

I'll take one of those hammers.  I wanted to reply but had to wait for my new account to be approved and couldn't post yet.  Let me know if you have any available and where to send the payment.  Thanks!

9 oz is definitely heavy enough...  I use an 8oz hammer for most of my work...  That is heavy for a 3/4" face.

I'll pm you with my contact though so you can let me know how to pay etc.

Saw this and had to share pictures of my custom hammer, made this about 6 yrs ago, before I was into guns, it was a first year engineering project. After carrying it around for a year or so, I found a use, the brass and delrin ends make it perfect for almost anything I do, it has build 4 ARs and 1 FAL, and helped on every C&R arm that I have. Very happy with it, and the center punch comes in handy. Steel Handle and Head, and the business ends are removable and replaceable. Only bad part is that the steel rusts because it was never finished, but a year ago I polished it up and painted it with clear coat spray paint and that has helped.

Now for some pictures:

Sorry I cant make more of these, but if you enroll in RIT as a 1st year Mechanical Engineer and you get to make one for free, aside from the 35k tuition...
