Well, I'm to the point that I'd like to get off the trodden path and move away from "cookie cutter" AR's, and am wanting to make my own configuration.

To do this, I'd like to toss out a few questions that would help me better decide which way I should go about doing this.

First off, what I have in mind is a 16" M4 barrel (chrome preferred), flat top upper, flip up rear sights (ARMS # 40), flip/removable front sight, TA31-F (already have it), and some type of rail system. I'm leaning toward no brake at all.

Let me get to the front sight question first. I have not been able to view an ACOG mounted on a flat-top (both my AR's have carry handle only), and am under the impression that the FS would likely block the view thru the ACOG.

Now, I realse that you can completely cover the front of the ACOG and still use the chevron as a both eyes open system, but without the magnification... In that sense, the FS doesn't matter. But for using the magnification of the ACOG, I am thinking this would not work well with FS. (feel free to correct me if I'm way off)

Sooo... (assuming I'm correct about the FS being a problem with flat-top ACOG) Since I cannot find any M4 uppers prebuilt with flipup/removable FS, I am wanting to know if this is a difficult modification to make. Will I need special tools? Is it hard to remove/hook up the gas tube? Is this something I should take on without having done this/seen it done before?

Next, rail systems. I would like to keep the complete weapon fairly light. If it's possible, I'd also like to have it FF'ed.

All I intend to add to the handguards is a stud for bipod, so I can attatch my harris bipod when I'm out plinking, and a pistol grip. (disclaimer: That's all for now! I'm sure more fun stuff will eventually find it's way into my posession, regardless of whether it stays on there all the time or not)

If the cost is getting up too high for a good lightweight freefloated rail system, I may initially stick with a cheaper FF tube, and later work my way up to the rail system and front grip.

Anyhow, any suggestions from you guys out there who have done this or have experience dealing with these pieces of equipment?

I'd appreciate any input.

PS, this is intended to be both a fun project to work on, and a good finished project. I'd really like to go ahead and do it myself, if possible.

Would likely try to build it off of a RRA upper. Already have lower and other fun stuff associated with it bought/in hand/on it's way. Just needing to work on this upper now.
