Call me clueless, but what does CAR stand for ? Colt Assault Rifles ? |
|
"CAR" is derived from the designation given to a carbine version of the M16 that was used in Viet Nam. CAR as in "Carbine, Armalite Rifle." Colt took over (won the contract) to manufacture the M16 and civilian AR15s from Armalite. Colt didn't want to advertise for Armalite so the "AR" became more a generic model term and the Armalite Rifle meaning fell away. Colt picked up the designation, "Carbine, AR," or "CAR," as a model description of the carbine version of the M16/AR15 and as a generic term for Colt Automatic Rifle. These days the use of CAR designates a carbine version of the AR15. If you say "CAR," most people with think 'telestock with a 16" bbl and short handguards." This is being replaced by the use of "M4" which is the current designation of the the M16 carbine. The M4 really is a bit more that just a carbine (as it describes certain enhancements and features, different telestock, stepped bbl etc. ) but it is becoming the generic term. |
