Ok... So would love a pistol caliber AR.  First, it would be a lot of fun, quiet if I ran a suppressor, cheap to shoot, and I could run it on the steel pistol range at my club.

Kinda leaning towards a .45 simply because I reload a metric butt-ton of .45 ACP, and have been looking at the Ron Williams set-up.

So.. What's the big draw to a DI rather than the standard blow-back?  Runs cleaner?  More reliable?

Just got my ducks in a row and sent him a IM speccing out a 9mm DI. I believe that everyone says they are much smoother then a Blow Back gun. Hence the reason I am trying one myself.

They run cleaner, recoil is almost nonexistent, and you eliminate the possibility of out of battery discharge. For un modified grease gun mags....the CNC AR45 lower and Cav arms with Hahn magwell adaptor are available, for a modded Grease Gun  mag Bazooka brothers makes a dedicated lower that requires cutting a retention slot on the magazine  for the standard mag catch that they use. Mag well adaptors are made to use .45 ACP Uzi Magazines in unmodified lowers as well...... requires modifying the Uzi mag with a retention slot too.

Above is  video of a couple of mine...one with a CNC AR45 lower, and the other with Uzi Mags and Magwell adaptor. Feel free to pick my brain if you have machining capability and want to build your own...be happy to help.

I like the option of using cast bullets in my 9mm blow-back not a good idea in a DI.

I've shot cast bullets through my DI45's but never enough to really wring it out.......just a couple of boxes at a time.......but really hard alloy bullets shouldn't hurt and I have shot a ton of commercial reloads with copper washed bullets..........ibut if you will mainly be shooting cast.....blowback will probably be the way to go.

I've noticed that lead does end up in the gas system. Even after as little as 15 rounds.
Also noted copper flakes from the Copper Washed bullets too. I still prefer DI but that's
just "My Thing". I'll use jacketed bullets for the most part..

Here is a good example of blowback versus DI. Could not find a Oly 45 full auto but this will work. The reason the blowback cannot do more than bursts is because of the muzzle travel. In DI this does not exist as my video shows. Watch the muzzles.

The DI does run cleaner because the bolt stays closed longer than the BB. I make magblocks that drop into the std AR lower & convert GG mags to fit/work with them. As for reliability any upper/mag, block set up right will be reliable. My converted mag & block are more than reliable. Never had one fail yet. Biggest issue is getting the upper broke in.
This is for the gent mentioning the DI9mm. DI9mm

Never realized there was so much recoil difference. The DI45 is even steady on a Slide Fire Stock. Easily kept on target for 25
rounds from a Grease Gun Magazine....

Interesting.... So is it generally not recommended to run cast through the DI upper?  I know the .300BLK guys are running cast.

Thanks for the responses.

Its not so much the lead but the lube. It can buildup in the gas tube to the point of restricting the gas flow. I know of shotters running my uppers with cast. Just use a hard alloy.

Ron,
I know you said you don't like shooting commercial 9mm ammo (like the Winchester white box stuff) in your DI setups because it's dirty. You prefer to use your on loads –– I was just wondering what powder you like to use? I can work up the loads, I was just wondering what was a better (cleaner) powder to use.

It's not clear to me why there should be less chance of an out of battery discharge with the DI guns, especially since they're not entirely unheard of in the 5.56 ARS.
I need to be schooled on this, so thanks in advance.

Depends on bullet weight. I use Quick load to tell me what powder burns 96% or better in given brl length. I am running HS-6 & longshot now in my 10.5" brl with a 124g bullet. Both burn 96%-98%. I just ordered some Vitavitori 3N37. QL sugests that it will burn 99.8%

Tell me what your thinking & I will run it for you

To be honest, I have not reloaded 9mm yet. I went to the indoor range that only allows commercial ammo –– not reloads. Problem is I'd buy one of those PMC 250 round boxes of ammo to shoot through my 16" barreled carbine (blowback) and my 9mm pistol and wind up leaving most of the brass there. I ordered one of those brass catchers for the carbine since I figured I could reload all or most of the brass and shoot at the outdoor range –– they don't restrict the type of ammo you can use. All I really want is good ammo for the outdoors range and plinking, no hot stuff. I would prefer to use something like 115gr to 125gr FMJ or even lead round nosed bullets to hold the cost down. I've gone to some of the commercial powder sites and got an idea as to what they say I should use but they don't say if their powder is clean or dirty or someplace in between. I know you don't like commercial ammo in the DI 9mm carbines so I don't know if I can copy your powder choice since my carbine is blowback. I don't need to have the reloads work in my pistol, only the AR carbine. The "Longshot" and "HS-6" powders lookd good and I found Hodgdon loads for lead and FMJ bullets –– I just don't know if those powders would be clean for me.

Even in BB they should be clean.
