I want to mount a Harris bipod on the freefloat tube.  I was planning on using a nut and a drop of loctite instead of tapping for the sling stud.  Does the tube simply un-thread from the receiver?  I tried it by hand but it's on there pretty tight.  I'm thinking I will need a vice reciever block and a strap wrench?   Any thoughts on whether is just screws off?

Thanks...Tim

My DPMS freefloat tubes are 2-piece jobs.  The barrel nut is screwed on and then the tube itself is threaded to that.  If you look closely you will see the seam about2" forward of the upper receiver along the tube.

The last one I took apart was so tight I had to hold the barrel in a barrel vice, wrap the tube in rag and unscrew it with a large slip-joint pliers.  Usually they are just hand tightened so you can hold the assembled rifle and have a friend unscrew the tube with both of you holding on tight!

My advice would be to not unscrew it at all - work out the centreline and drill it in place.  You should be able to fit a small wrench under the tube to hold the nut while tightening.  If you mark the centerline, unscrew the tube and drill it, it may not be centered when you screw the tube back on.

Thanks for the info, I did notice the seam about 2" forward of the receiver and wondered if that was a seperate piece.  You confirmed my fears on getting it lined back up, as I probably wouldn't get it tight enough.  I'll have to get a small wrench to run up in there.

Thanks for your help Monkey-man.

Brought my .22 DPMS upper to a 'smith to install a Yankee Hill Machine four rail free floater tube.  Dude, it's on there tight, however the rails are like five degrees off to the right (just noticable enough to be a pain in the eye).

Is there something built in to the four rail forearms to make them stay flush at 90 degrees or did the 'smith just do a crappy job on my rifle?

12/21 update:
Went back to the gunsmith and got it straightened, no charge.
Pictures coming soon.
