Does the firing pin's retaining pin on the dpms 308 bolt just slide in and out?  I had one break and on reinstallation of a new one, it seems a little unsecure.  Do they just slide in and out?  Thanks.

I found that finding the perfect amount of tension can be tricky but possible.  Slide a razor blade in between the legs and flex ever so slightly and try the fit again.  You don't want it too tight or it will break like the first one.  Having it simply fall out isn't a big deal unless you have to fieldstrip on the range, then the possibility of loosing that pin skyrockets.  Just go slow and try to get a fit still slips in but has to be worked out

It happens quite frequently we've resolved it by using a cotter pin, similar to the AR-15, only its a 1/8" diameter cut to the right length. You may need to flatten the head of the cotter pin so it sits slightly below the carrier surface so it won't rub on the upper receiver. Can't understand why they don't use a cotter pin like the AR-15 because they don't break and they stay securely in place.

You could try an AR10 firing pin retaining pin.

Regular cotter pins that are found at the hardware store aren't made with the same type of steel....stick with gun parts....

What is the standard material and heat treat for the DPMS retaining pin seeing how they break all the time on the DPMS .308? ....as I have never have had a cotter pin break on the AR-15 or DPMS .308.

Also the AR-10 firing pin retaining pin didn't fit with the .308 carriers we have (may work with others, I just don't have experience with other carriers so can't say if it would work on not with another carrier) and with the issues of DPMS FPRP we had to come up with something as we do a lot of testing, and can't be fooling around with DPMS FPRP. Seems whatever heat treatment they are using is causing them to be brittle even had a rifle show up with one of DPMS FPRP broken, so for us we use the cotter pins (with modified head) in our testings of .308's.

I run a DPMS chrome BCG in my MEGA build and had this same problem.

I fixed mine by inserting a small flat head screw driver into the gap then prying it apart.

Surprisingly the retaining pin has lasted with this quick fix over a dozen times from taking it apart and cleaning.

Good luck.
