It isn't necessary, it's a luxury. It makes it easier to be more accurate. A good trigger is lighter and crisper. I have an AP4 myself, and for what I do with it, 3 gun, I haven't found it necessary yet. However, it sure would make those 100+ yard shots for time easier.
In contrast, my Rock River A4 has a 2 stage national match trigger that is awesome. It just takes all the magic out of shooting, kinda like the eotech/aimpoints. You simply put the dot on the target and repeat as necessary. The "game" becomes how fast you can run, reload, and steady the rifle.

Shoot someone else's rifle with a nice trigger, and you'll "get it". It's not necessary, just a luxury that makes target work a million times easier.

I am eyeing the JP Trigger spring kit first. It only cost $10 plus shipping and is supposed to be quite an improvement.  If you want a total replacement, JP makes that too.

Others will have to chime in here....I have only used the Rock River.

I'll have to vote for the RRA NM trigger also, have one on my AP4 LR 308 and it will make a difference at long range.
