What is the consensus on DPMS barrels?  I have one listed as .223.  Will it shoot 5.56 or not?  Did they really mill differently?   What would happen if 5.56 is shot out of it?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

DPMS stamps .223 on the barrels, but their barrels are NATO 5.56mm Government profile.  They will shoot 5.56mm without problems.
No one knows why they don't stamp them 5.56 - that's just how they do it.

I got this info in the FAQs here, btw.

I have a dpms and the barrel is stamped 5.56.  I'd have the get the ok to shoot 5.56 out of a .223 stamped barrel from the horse's mouth but that's just me.

I have heard of this discrepancy before.  Does anyone have a DPMS labeled as .223 that is shooting 5.56 out of it?

I would ream the chamber of any barrel that I did not know was 5.56 before shooting 5.56 through it.

Even "5.56' chambers are sometimes not really "5.56".

Not to sound inexperienced, but what and how would I go about reaming?

Easiest thing to do is find a local gunsmith, it is a quick and cheap operation.

What do they do?  Is it milled somehow?

No, they basically use a bit (reamer) and drill out the chamber by hand.

You can buy a reamer from m-guns.com but they are expensive if you're just going to do one barrel, might as well have a gunsmith do it.

If your DPMS barrel is stamped .223, it is chambered in .223 and only .223 ammo should be used.

If it is stamped 5.56, it is chambered in 5.56 and can safely fire both .223 and 5.56 ammo.

That is not correct information.

Could you please post a link so I can have one of the site Mods update it with the correct information?
