I am trying to remove my barrel on my DPMS upper and I cannot budge it. I have the wrench for it but all I am doing is ripping the teeth off the barrel nut. I assume its a right hand thread, but maybe DPMS is different? I've soaked it in a bunch of brake cleaner to help clear out the built up carbon and have tried heating it up with a torch, with no luck.

Anyone have some insight for getting this thing off before all the teeth are stipped or if it may be a left hand thread before I try that?

Thanks.

Did someone maybe use red loctite on it? That'll require a torch.

Someone needs to be slapped if they did that.

I think RRA does it. There might still be a few lowers I built years ago that I red loctited the receiver extension on.

Of course I traded or sold them all off at gunshows, well and to a few unsuspecting victims

Not sure if it has loctite, I bought it in 2006 from del-tons website.

So I'm assuming that they are traditionally right hand thread?

I used a torch but didn't get it red hot.

Try putting the upper in the freezer for about half an hour. The aluminum receiver body will contract more than the steel barrel nut with that exposure. It works for me.

I don't have a dpms upper but I have never heard of one threaded the opposite direction.

Thanks for that info, I will give it a try tomorrow.

FWIW...My DPMS which is a `94 vintage rifle does not have left hand threads on it...

Not to imply that you're dumb but....
you DID remove the gas block and tube first, right?

Yes, I removed the front sight/gas block and the gas tube. I also broke off the springs that hold the delta ring forward so I wouldn't have to compress when trying to loosen the barrel nut.

The weather has been around the 20's-30's so it's been nice and cold when I've heated the nut and tried to take it off.

Ok, another thing to try that will work but BE CAREFUL..........GO SLOW

get out your hacksaw, put in a quality bi-metal blade, and slowly start cutting a slot in the barrel nut.( from front to back)
you DON'T have to go all the way threw, you want to "weaken" the nut so it relaxes
should just about fall off then

you could even use an electric or air powered cutoff tool

he'll have to take off the FSB to put on a new barrel nut won't he ?I'd try anything before cutting off the barrel nut....try some type very deep penetration oil.Soak it overnight.Plus the freezer technique sounds good.Try both at the same time.oops I did'nt realize he had already taken off the front sight base.I guess sawing off the barrel nut is a plausible solution.

a silly question I know, but it has to be asked, you are turning the nut in the correct direction to loosen it correct? If you are looking at the receiver from the muzzle end you should turn the nut COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to loosen it...no offense but things have way of getting turned around. If noyhing else works and it gets to the point that you have cut off the Delta ring, a pipe wrench on the barrel nut and the proper application of heat should get it off (heat is your friend)....<><....:)

Ok, I finally got it today. I went to a friends house to use their vice which was much more stable. The one I was using moved around too much, it was mounted in a van compared to a nice bench mounted vice. I did end up using a pipe wrench also.

Thanks for all your input. I hope to get some pics up soon.

Oh, I also lost the washer for the flash hider/muzzle brake, is it just a standard washer I could get at Lowes/Home Depot or are they special?
