Hello,
Has anyone ever weighed the free float aluminum hand guard that comes with the LR308 B w/ 18" heavy barrel. I'm kicking around getting the carbon fiber free float hand guard and according to the description, it weighs 4.8 oz. I know there's an outfit out there that will turn down a barrel that can lighten the rifle's overall weight up a bit but the rifle shoots 1/2" moa and I'd be afraid to change the harmonics. I just wanted to see what the difference in the weights between the two are. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

When I was building my .308 I originally bought the handguard you are talking about but went with a VTAC instead. Similar in weight although I never weighed them. VTACs are some of the lightest handguards around that are metal and the DPMS wasn't that much heavier. Personally, I would stay away from the carbon fiber handguards. I have read a few circumstantial posts about the carbon fiber de-laminating in extreme environments and Florida's humidity and heat can possibly cause funny problems. YMMV
As for the barrel, that is where you will save the most weight by far if you have it turned down. I originally bought a 20" bull barrel on sale and had it cut to 18" and turned to a SPR profile. Easily saved 2 or 3 pounds of weight. Didn't shoot it before having it slimmed down but it shoots great now. You might got over to the ADCO industry forum and ask about harmonics there. They are the ones who cut my barrel and did a fantastic job. I am not versed in that sort of thing. |
