I have a DPMS LR-308 and would like to replace the hanguard with a Yankee Hill Specter Free Float.  Is this going to work?  I have heard that DPMS uses different threads on there barrel nut?  Any other parts that I need to order? I have already purchased the lo-pro gas block as well, I am just concerned with the barrel nut and jam parts?

I didn't know YHM started doing 308 parts.  You might wanna double check that.  Also 7.62x51 ARs require a different bbl nut wrench the standard AR15 wrench doesn't work.

Check this.

This is the first I've seen of the Apex and I like it. It says on their website that the handguard attaches to the factory barrel nut. The "factory" DPMS barrel nut is quite large (the diameter of the free float tube itself) so I was wondering if they meant this nut? Bushmaster uses a variety of handguards. Did you replace your original free float tube with the Apex? I assume that the large free float tube-type barrel nut is what they mean by factory (it's standard on all LR-308s outside of the SASS).

You need a FF for a 308. Sampson, Troy and DD make 'em, won't be cheap or light but you will have four raging rails to mount shit on a 308 that's best suited as a DMR/SPR role. Other than a dedicated top rail and a bottom rail for a handstop or bipod there is no point for a quad rail on such an already heavy gun.

Trust me I know from experience, DPMS slapped a 1.5 pound quadrail on my DPMS MK12 308. All I have on the pig is a handstop. If you have a standard FF tube I will trade you if you pay for the smithing.

I also had a 16 inch RRA LAR8 that I thought would be a great CQB gun. The only quad rail I could find for the thing weighed 4 fraking pounds! I sold that bitch quick.

Now don't get me wrong 308 ARs are not just for prone/bench shooting but damn are they heavy with optics and alot of shit.

A standard YHM won't fit and they won't sell you a .308 version because they have an agreement with Fulton Armory to market them. They won't even sell repacement parts for the .308 model. That being said, if you want one bad enough, look at Fulton Armory.

I did the JP enterprises FF tube with optional rails where you want them.      I love it.

My LR308 ORC had standard midlength plastic hadguards.  I took them off.  Dremeled the bayo lug and delta ring off then installed the APEX bbl nut clamp then the tube to the clamp.  I do not know if their tube will fit the DPMS free float tube bbl nut.  The APEX is designed to clamp to the standard bbl nut that uses the delta ring and spring to hold on plastic handguards.

They make them to fit the Bushmaster / DPMS / R25  pattern and another version of same thing for the Armalite and I believe RRA.  I used the APEX tube because it did not require the larger .308 pattern bbl wrench.  I did not want to buy a .308 pattern wrench for a 1 time float tube install.

Thanks. From this response I am now 100% sure that that the Apex handguard clamp won't work on mine. Yours is the standard AR-15 type of barrel nut, and I was confused because DPMS' idea of standard is that ugly free float tube. I ordered a "standard" barrel nut from DPMS as the Apex looks like the way to go. Lots of people seem to like it and the low weight is helpful. I liked the looks of the Badger Ordnance, but that's apparently been discontinued for the AR-10 and LR-308 models. I cannot for the life of me figure out why DPMS designed their free float tubes the way they did. They make service and modification extremely difficult - if you're lucky, you can remove the large "barrel nut" (basically this (or the Armalite equivalent, anyway): http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=EA1146&ReturnUrl=Categories2.aspx?Category=255f0d06-0cac-46bd-b9f7-bb17d46b98ed) with a strap wrench and a torch. I wasn't. (Tons of red Loctite?) I'm guessing they want you to buy their extremely expensive proprietary wrench ($50+ from most places) and an action block just to remove something when a standard barrel nut would've worked just fine. Obviously, the existence of every other LR-308 handguard on the market shows that you don't need that type of barrel nut to have a free float handguard.

In reguards to an action block for the LR-308; I'm not sure who told me, but I just put two blocks of wood in a vice, with the top reciever lugs between them, then used a strap wrench to unscrew the FF tube.    It was very easy.     Anyway, I was planning on buying a special wrench, and action block and ended up buying nothing to do it.

FWIW the DPMS SASS I traded for came with this FF tube. I like it.

The top picture seems to be one I have not seen before. I have been shopping for 308 rails to see whats out there. Does anybody have any good pictures of the top one installed on a rifle. I looked at their webpage and did not see any rifles with this rail installed.
