Getting old is not for the faint of heart. My last trip to the 200 yard line convinced me I need to get a scoped upper for shooting targets. In my brief research I've become enamored of the DPMS Lo-Pro 20" bull barrel assembly:

www.dpmsinc.com/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=FTBL-LP

Looks pretty good to me. I like the truck axle barrel profile. I'd prefer an anodized finish to the Teflon, but don't think it's a deal killer. Price ($559) seems reasonable with the included bolt carrier assembly.

I would like to hear other's thoughts. Is this a good way to go? Pros and cons? Take a look at another make? All comments welcome. Thanks!

I can really only comment on the actual upper.  Tony used the Lo-Pro upper for my .458 SOCOM build and I am completely satisfied with it.  At first I thought I might miss the forward assist, even though I have never used it on my other two ARs,  but soon "got over it."  Also, the shell deflector that is absent on the Lo-Pro is not needed either for a right handed shooter.

Thanks for the comments. How is the Teflon holding up? Is it chipping around the ejection port or anything like that?

The ejection port on mine was enlarged for the .458 SOCOM case so the inside edge of the port is not black because of the milling.  However, there is no chipping, peeling or any other kind of wear around the port.  I have between 400 and 500 rounds through it and it shows no wear at all on the outside, and only very minor rubbing on the inside from the bolt carrier.

I have 2 lo-pro uppers and have not had any problem with either.

One sees a steady diet of the cheap russian steel cased stuff and even then the cases barely leave marks on the rear area behind the ejection port, which are only visable in the right light.
Even these are not affecting the finish in any way.

My only comment is to check around at other DPMS dealers, for they often don't sell for the full recommended retail price.
I.e. MidwayUSA.com has then for over $150 less, and both of my lo-pro uppers came from them -- 1 stripped, and 1 assembled on a 16" stainless (blackened) bull with the M4 handguards ($374, complete)

Only bad news is that it is a 30-day special order item.

Have fun with the new set-up.

Another great response. Thanks! I think for $150 I could wait a month... I'll check around for other prices as well.
