I can pick up this receiver for $99.95 plus shipping and FFL transfer of $25.00.
Is this a good receiver for my first build?

Thanks CJ

The finish on mine was great and it fits nice and tight on my CMMG upper.

I've got two build on DPMS lowers.  Fit was excellent on all parts and I have no complaints.

I assembled two of the DPMS lowers yesterday, and the assembly was a piece of cake..  The DPMS may not have the degree of finish of my MEGA, but are just as tight when mounted to the same upper as the MEGA.  I would definately use them in the future, especially for the price I paid...

Thanks for the replies, it is a forged receiver so the green light is on.

My first AR is built ten years ago on a DPMS cast receiver. Shoots great then and now. What's wrong with cast?

Are you saying the MEGA has a better finish than the DPMS?

Cast are not as durable as forged.  Probably just fine for most of us.

I've had 3 DPMS lowers, all were fine except the cast preban one had very tight (off center?) rear takedown pin holes.

I also got one of the first Cast DPMS lowers before the ban.

Fit was perfect - Anodize / Finish was great - but they had a lot to learn about how to ENGRAVE on an AR receiver...

I have two DPMS lowers, and two uppers that I think are DPMS.  The uppers are fine. The lowers?

Well, the first one, bought alnost three years ago as a complete lower, had a bunch of parts either damaged or out of spec. Worst of all, the cut on the front lugs, where the upper lug fits, was milled off center, so the upper is tilted slightly when it's mounted.  Also, the finish was just barely passable. I swore I'd never buy another piece of DPMS stuff again.

Two weeks ago, at the local show hunting for a lower, the people I usually go to for lowers had only some Olys and one DPMS.  Since I've been baycotting Olympic for nearly 20 years (don't ask) I took a look at the DPMS.

Surprisingly, the thing looked much better than the one I had at home. Finish is much better, and except for a forge line residue on the front wall, edges, internal cuts etc all looked good; and the price was right, at $105 (remember, no shipping or dealer paperwirk costs), They've cut back the size of the logo a bit, and even the side markings are more attractive.

I still wouldn't mail order one, because I don't trust them to be consistent in what they put out; but the new lower does prove that they CAN make a good piece when they want to.

Yep, overall, I like the appearance of the MEGA better than the DPMS.  The MEGA has extremely clean lines, and a very nice finsih, while the DPMS has the forge line visible, and the lines are not as clean.  The adonizing on the DPMS better matches that of my J&T M4 kit, so I replaced my mega with the DPMS (also because the DPMS I bought is LEO Only marked)  The MEGA I have & the MEGA I have ordered will definately be used at some point in the future.

DPMS receivers are fine, but note they they coat with black teflon over the anodizing...

Buddy has a 20'' built on a DPMS lower. It is fine. Never had a problem. I won't comment on the finish because he has had it for some time and beat the piss out of it.

The finish on my MEGA is nice. Dark and very good. I will be ordering another one very soon.

I used a forged DPMS for my last build.  Excellent quality receiver, would use another in a heartbeat.  I purchased mine from a local dealer, so I had the chance to look it over before laying down the green.  Fit and finish were superb.  Fits my Colt small-hole upper significantly better than a Bushmaster lower did (tighter fit, no wobble).
