DPMS SASS...? What are your feelings on the weapon...? It's exactly what I am looking for, but would prefer a 24 inch barrel...I know with DPMS options I could more or less the same thing, but piecemeal it becomes a lot more money as far as my current deal goes.... |
| If your serious about picking one up, you should head over to snipershide.com, and in the "for sale" section, there is a group buy going on, with great deals on all DPMS rifles, your SASS can be had for several hundred less than retail cost, but the GB ends on the 11th i think. If they get 20 rifles ordered, then they are rafling off an AR to one buyer, i believe it's the "panther lite 16" |

just curious how did it out preform the MK11? specifically in what areas? how far out was it taken/ at distance, how did 18 inch do compared to the mk11's longer barrel? was it able to hold MOA at extended ranges as well as the Mk11? how did it feel recoil wise compared to the MK11's, carbine gas system vs rifle lenght? |

I would safely say that the SASS outperformed the MK11 across the board. We are limited to 500 yards here, and there was not a "powerband" per se on the Knights units. (there were multiple issues throughout the range days with the SR-25's/MK11's) We avg 3/4 on the DPMS, and it held all the way out to the 500. I myself was skeptical with the shorter barrel, but it is apparent with the new technologies that better built shorter barrels are eliminating the need for length. (See Noveske/Larue). Recoil: The first shot out of the SASS, actually made snot fly out of my nose. But I am kinda girly. I did notice that it was a significant amount of recoil, and I had to adjust for my follow through. I was playing catch up. Is this important? Somewhat. It is something we have to get used to...I ran from 50 to 500 and back on 8 inch steel as fast as I could, and got 100%...But I am a BAMF... Ammo used: 118, 118LR, Fed 168, BH 168, 172, 175, Rem 168, Delinked M60, SA surplus, Some kind of Varmt round..VMax i think (Very Accurate by the way)... I think it did well with all... Most accurate with the Federal and the Black Hills 168. No, I do not know the barrel specs, It is a DPMS proprietary thing. Try to get it out of them...It is a tight weapon. I think there game is on in the recent batch of weapons...Some of your 3 letter agencies and PSA's are using the hell out of them. Man, I should get paid to do this.... |

I just bought one a few weeks ago and out of the box the fit and finish was excellent. The upper to lower fit was real tight---which I consider good. In order to mount a scope over the buis I had to use my Larue SPR 1.5 for enough clearance. This raised my cheekweld a little higher than I like. In order to get the rear lever to lock on the Larue I had to move the buis back one notch on the receiver. IMHO buis in the civilian world are more for show and just get in the way when mounting a scope. My first trip to the range was not as expected. I was not able to rear bag the rifle on the bench with the Vltor stock like I usually do with the A2 stock. This made my accuracy testing difficult and inconclusive. The weather was turning bad and after a while I got frustrated and left. O.K. enough about the bad stuff. I took the SASS back to the range the next day along with my LR-308. Using the LR-308 lower with the A2 stock on the SASS made accuracy testing off the bench much easier. It averaged .75" with FGMM and Winchester match, and about 1" with BH 168 and Remington match at 100 meters. The barrel on this one is fluted and marked 7.62 (as opposed to the LR-308 marked .308) but it did not shoot the M 118 LR round very well which suprised me. Both lowers have the JP trigger but I think a good 2 stage like KAC would help me shoot it more accurately. The recoil was not an issue and the rifle functioned 100%. After cleaning it, I put the Vltor lower back on it and shot it prone with the bipod. The Vltor stock worked quite well in the prone position using the off hand to hold the rifle tight in the shoulder. I was able to make head shots on a target every time at 300 meters. I also took the scope off, zeroed the irons, and shot with them a little. I like them. My thoughts on the rifle? It looks cool and IS funtional. It was built for a particular purpose and fits that purpose quite well. Out to 600 meters in field conditions I believe it would be quite adequate. This thing was meant to be carried a certain distance by a soldier and it is already heavy. A 24" barrel would make it even heavier. Hope this helps... |

Glockslap, sorry I was busy and could not get online. The DPMS rifle shoots 1-moa with federal goldmedal ammo. Mk11 costs like $8000 and it aint going to outshoot it. I have had several friends come back from the sandbox saying the Mk11mod0 aint what its all cracked up to be. |

Check! My lament is the best price I can get for a 24 inch tube matching half the SASS options-only matches it price wise.If I could get the SASS for the group buy with a 22-24, that would be it. Done deal. I already have an AP4 and I want to expand the difference rather than having several similar weapons... |
| Have you thought about the new cobb .308 rifle that uses HK91/G3 mags. I think you can get it with a full rail system for the same price as an Armalite. I know it will do .75MOA with the Lothar-Walther match barrel. Cobb rifles web site |
| You really only have a couple days on that Sniper's Hide group buy. I think he's closing it Monday night: midnight. Very good prices, but long wait. Apparently DPMS is about 5-6 months behind on making these. Still, with the Democrats coming in, I figured I'd better get them now. Especially since there is such a long lead time. |

I'm picking up a LR308 in the GB by hooper, and plan on buying a spare upper later, something a little shorter, 16"-18" for short range plinking, as lugging the 24" will get old, maybe around tax return time i'll hunt for the spare lower, but i heard that with DPMS as behind as they are with rifles, don't even bother with orders for uppers, as it's a long wait for them puppys. Maybe i'll get lucky the day after my tax return shows up. But don't have the coin laying around for 2 rifles. Hell, if we reach 20 rifles in the GB, i'll pray to win the freebie, and then trade it for an upper.............wishful thinking. I'm confident with my purchase, as i have been reading around for a couple months now on reviews, and tyhe positive far outweight the negative, and the chance at a GB, i had to convince the wife i really needed the LR308 for christmas. |
