What are the thoughts on a DPMS stainless steal lower for use in a varmint/long range AR setup.  Cost aside and weight not being an issue

I like the idea of it being more resisance 'banging around'...not that I have ever had any issues with aluminum receivers.

No idea on the DPMS stainless steel lowers, but there was a discussion about the Group Industries stainless steel M16 lowers in the M16 forum and the consensus seemed to be that they were about 1lb heavier than an aluminum lower and practically indestructable.  At least one poster had a "kaboom" that blew the upper reciever apart and the lower was just fine.

On a $10,000 registered reciever M16, I can see this being a major feature.  But for a standard rifle, I don't think it is really worth it.  Lowers are cheap and the standard 7075 aluminum lower seems to hold up quite well being abused by the miltary so I don't really see a benefit for a non-NFA rifle.

They're nice, but a want to have, not a need to have.

There's your answer.

I'd rather have a forged lower from a reputable manuf myself.

And you can buy a second and third lower for the same price, And donate them to the less fortunate. It is the christmas season after all..

i built up my precision / bench AR a few years back on one of those. heavy was what i was going for so the extra pound or so from a stainless lower was the deciding factor in buying it.

no quality issues to speak of and the only hicup in the build was that i needed to run a bit down the pivot pin detent hole because i ordered mine with the black coating and it had some build up that made the hole tight. other than that it was a fine lower for what i used it for.
